INSTRUCTIONS FOR AFTERNOON GASTROSCOPY AND COLONOSCOPY USING PREPKIT C PREPARATION

Please adhere to instructions below, not the instructions given with PREPKIT C product.

TWO DAYS BEFORE EXAMINATION:

  • Begin low fibre diet (see diet suggestions for guidelines).
  • Evening – mix up the 70g pack of Glycoprep with one (1) litre of water and put in the fridge to chill.

DAY BEFORE EXAMINATION:

  • Morning - continue with low fibre diet.

Afternoon – low fibre lunch. From 1pm STOP ALL SOLID FOOD until after your procedure - drink clear fluids only (see

diet suggestions for guidelines).

  • First dose (6pm) - mix one sachet of Picoprep in a glass of warm water (approx 250ml). Chill if preferred and drink entire glass. Follow this with clear fluids to remain hydrated.

DAY OF EXAMINATION - REMEMBER NO SOLID FOOD TODAY

  • Second dose (6am) - Drink prepared Glycoprep 1 litre, no slower than 1 glass every 15 mins.
  • Third dose (7.30am) - Repeat same as first dose of Picoprep and drink entire glass.
  • Complete clearance of bowel can take a few hours, so don't worry if you are not clear by the end of mixture

Note:Because this preparation will cause multiple bowel motions it is advisable that you remain within easy reach of toilet facilities, therefore you may be more comfortable in your home environment. Bowel motions may be urgent. Individual responses to laxatives do vary - the preparation often works within 30 minutes but may take up to three hours.

Clear fluids are encouraged. During your preparation it is important to drink plenty of clear fluids.

Note:If you have a dry mouth or feel dehydrated, drink more fluids or water with one teaspoon of sugar and half teaspoon salt per glass.

STOP ALL FLUIDS 2 HOURS BEFORE APPOINTMENT TIME

Only by carrying out the preparation as above will the bowel be clean enough for the procedure to be carried out. otherwise things can be missed (such as polyp s).

Do not hesitate to telephone Endoscopy Auckland if you have any queries or doubts about the preparation.

PLEASE NOTE:

If you are feeling nauseated, gingerale may help due to its natural anti-nausea properties. It is not unusual to feel cold or bloated when drinking the bowel preparation. Wear warm comfortable clothing and try short walks to help alleviate bloating. Vaseline can be wiped around the anus to reduce discomfort during bowel cleansing. It is important to drink the full amount of bowel preparation to achieve adequate cleansing of the bowel.

If you suffer from any medical condition that may require specialised information or treatment during preparation/procedure, please contact Endoscopy Auckland for advice.

MEDICATIONS:

If you are taking Iron tablets please discontinue them one (1) week prior to the test.

If you are taking Warfarin, Clopidogrel (Plavix) or Dabigatran (Pradaxa) regularly, please advise Endoscopy Auckland beforehand.

If you are a diabetic it is important to notify Endoscopy Auckland, as there are special instructions for preparation.

You can take all other usual medications 4 hours prior to beginning or 4 hours after completing the bowel preparation to allow for absorption.

Southern Cross Insurance: Endoscopy Auckland will apply for prior approval on your behalf on receipt of your membership number.

Any shortfall is payable at the completion of the procedure.

Organise a family member or friend (or a taxi) to drop you at Endoscopy Auckland and collect you approximately 1½ hours after your appointment time. Someone should stay with you the night following the procedure.

You will have the opportunity to speak with the doctor performing the procedure before the examination begins. The approximate cost is between $2000-$2900. If for some reason you also require antibiotics (you will be told at the time) there is an extra cost of between $5.00-$55.00. If a procedure requires very complicated intervention, e.g. Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) or APC (Argon Plasma Coagulation), the estimate we have given you can be too conservative. This is often difficult to anticipate. Charges may vary up to an additional $1500-$2000.
