Hiring Updates

·  Interviews for the Workforce Executive Dean Position will be held on November 5 and 7.

·  Interviews of two of the candidates for Internship Coordinator have been completed. Three more candidates are being scheduled for next week.

·  An OCE&E team member and Rachel Smith from Workforce Education have left their positions.

·  The IEP full-time faculty position has been posted and will close on November 17.

·  The Evening Coordinator finalists were given to Marci. This position was only open to current employees.

·  The Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning has selected six candidates to interview. There were forty-nine applicants and twenty-one were selected to be reviewed by the committee. The start date will be beginning of winter quarter.

·  Interviews for the candidates for the Advising-International Students position are being scheduled.

·  Invitations have gone out to the selected campus staff to serve on the Presidential Hiring Committee. Fifty people volunteered and seventeen were selected. The Chancellor would like the selected of the new President to happen before spring break. A notice will be placed in the November 8 Chronicle, to keep a lookout for information about this position.

Work Force Education Office Need/Changes

The front desk in the lobby of the OCE&E is an integrated area with staff from each of the partners. All the staff at the front desk is cross trained, and the three full-time staff works together at the desk. Currently the Workforce Education Office has their doors open to walk-ins, students know to come straight up to the Workforce Office, and there is a manned front desk there, too. The Partners would like all students to come in through the front desk. All clients would then be required to come through the front desk. More discussion about the situation will be happening, and Dawn and Bill will keep IC updated. Workforce and the Partners will continue to look for a solution.

Obligations to Military who are called into Duty

What happens to a military student when they are called back to service? According to WA state law, the student is allowed to withdraw with 100 percent refund or is able to complete the course and finish when they return from active duty, no matter how long they are on active duty.

Effective July 28 2013, military students who are ordered active for a period of 30 days or less are covered by the new RCW. Age is not an issue. Gregg handed out copies of the regional code RCW 28B.10.270. It was suggested the copy of the regional code should be included under faculty resources or someplace where the faculty could find it. It was also suggested this code be in the policy and procedures.

Assessment Committee Plans and Involvement of Faculty

Involvement of faculty is part of Strategic Plan. Last Friday the Assessment Committee had their first meeting. Marti and Jack will be co-chairing. The committee is working on building up committee membership. Jack Bautsch, Marti Rickel, Denise Filiatrault, Betty Williams, Jamila Barton, Joe Smith, Jill Lane, Christy Scheuer and Mike Gaul are now part of the Assessment Committee. The librarians and will be joining in winter. The committee will be looking at the comprehensive assessment plan. It was decided that each committee person will survey the members of their department “what do you want to do to improve teaching” and “how can the assessment committee help? Electronic survey will be used by most of the members. Jack met with Mike Gaul and Christy Scheuer and they are interested in pursuing the AA degree piece. Jill Lane will be working on rubrics.

New ELO’s have not been identified. The thought was to look at the ELO work last year which was ethical awareness. What did the faculty assess in their Part B.? It was suggested doing something at the all faculty retreat in February.

It was suggested asking CAS to be champions in encouraging faculty with what needs to be done, how much have they learned and more. Ask CAS if they can have a role in this? Need to take message to the faculty. Invite Jack to come to your divisions to talk to the faculty.

“What’s Next?” buttons are coming back. Try to engage faculty where they can help to make a difference.

Latest on the Env Scan

The Env Scan was initiated back in January. The District wanted to do this research for the entire District. The will be a meeting with Dr. Kester on November 4 from 10:30 am – noon in the boardroom. The meeting will look at what has been done so far and what the District is doing. Dr. Kester is developing a tool for planning in the future. The Env Scan will be discussed at the October 30 All College Meeting.

Beyond Inclusion

It was decided by IC to work on one section at a time, rather than whole chapters, because the material is so dense. The first few chapters are very important. It was suggested everyone start with the introduction. Everyone has already read the Onion piece. The ‘addressing’ and ‘ranks’ tools are important. It was suggested doing the addressing and ranks in two meetings. The group will ask facilitators to come in at key places, identified as we work through the book. It was suggested that we keep a list of all questions that can be tracked and then invite Karen or Betty to facilitate the discussions around the questions. Read up to Page 23 for the next IC.

Sharing

Workforce

Kristi Lagrutta and Steve Thomas are at the first part of Leadership Training for Workforce Deans, and Terry and Bill will be attending the WEC conference with them tomorrow. Applications Development BAS: The NWCCU Substantive Change document has been completed and mailed. November 6 is when the thirty days comment period (for colleges to protest the development of the degree) will be over, and then the last parts of the SBCTC paperwork can go to the state board in December.

Strategic Initiatives

·  SEM is working on the goals. One enrollment, one retention and three objectives for each one and these will be tied to strategic plan and benchmarks. There will be some changes in the structure of SEM. A SEM member or two will be responsible for the objective. The time of the meeting will change and SEM will meet quarterly.

·  College Readiness will be looking at the orientation model for new students and using it for upper level ESL students.

Institutional Effectiveness

Jack is waiting for benchmark action plans from the division and/or department offices, which are due to him by the end of October.

Workforce Education

Workforce Education will be launching “end next quarter” workshops on November 20 and piloting them with work force students. Workforce Education will be helping students complete graduation paper work. Outreach to students close to graduation. Terry asked Dawn to craft something with information that can be sent out to faculty.

The OCE&E policy committee will be meeting on November 8 to talk about the integration director position.

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

The Articulation and Transfer Council stated that People Soft will not be able to do course listings with ampersands. This has huge implications for the Common Course Numbering system, which currently uses ampersands. The UW is still requiring a special math requirement. Reciprocity agreements are a statewide mandate, but some colleges are experiencing difficulties with faculty acceptance of students who have tested or taken courses elsewhere. It was suggested that the statewide agreements should be resent out and discussed at division meetings where appropriate.

Library

There are still a few part-time faculty that have not attended the ADA trainings. An email will be sent out. Collaboration Day is November 1. The TLC and Library will be offering more exhibits and programming for the NSCC.

Basic & Transitional Studies

The Library helped the students with the checkout of the computers from the I-Dea Grant. Kim attended the Council of Basic Skills state meeting.

Student Services

·  The discussion at the Advising Council was around the reciprocity agreement. Technically we need to accept a student with a grade point of 1.7. How are we getting the word out to faculty to address these changes? Need to read the agreement for clarification.

·  The Gates Grant (Pathways to Completion) is initiating mandatory orientation. All development math classes this quarter have an advisor attached to each class.

·  Common Core meeting with Seattle Public school and math faculty – only one math faculty from North attended.

·  Kristi, Terry and Steve are transferring scope and sequences to the new program planning guides.

·  Is NSCC interested in Statway? There is worry about transferability of Statway. More discussion for the next meeting.

·  Chancellor wants more high school students to attend the colleges. More targeted outreach to them is being done through Susan Shanahan.

·  American Financial Solution offers financial literacy for students, faculty and staff for free.

·  James Armstrong has been hired for the Evening Manager position. Let faculty know that James will be going into the classroom.

·  SDS meets twice a month and would like an IC Representative at the meeting.

Other

Wellness conversation about all staff workload and turnover should happen. Some concern about the amount of work assigned to each job was voiced. Departments should do assessment about work load issues – this could be their assessment project for the year.
