INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Completing the Training Modules
In accordance with federal regulations and OSU IRB policy, training in the ethical use of human subjects is required for all study team members engaged in research projects involving human subjects. To satisfy this requirement, please complete all required training modules plus at least one elective module relevant to your research or role. You will be able to print a completion report for your records when all requirements have been met. The course does not have to be completed in one sitting and the modules may be completed in any order.

Scope of Requirements
This requirement applies to all study team members. This includes faculty, students, staff and other individuals involved in research with human subjects.

Timing of Completion
For new studies, training modules must be completed and passed for all study team members in order for the IRB to approve the research project. New study team members must complete the training prior to conducting research on an existing project.

Documentation of Completion
When all required modules and one elective module are passed at 80% or better, CITI will automatically provide the OSU IRB with an electronic record of completion. No additional documentation is required.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits
Six (6) hours of CME or CE credits are available for this course through the University of Miami CME Office. To qualify for the CME or CE Credits you are required to complete 12 modules in the Biomedical Track. This will require at least 6 hrs of study time. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Training Requirements

Completing the training modules:

In accordance with IACUC Policy, designed to support Federal regulations for training, participants who will work with live vertebrate animals are required to complete basic training. To satisfy this requirement, please complete “Working with the IACUC” course. Please select the course for the animal species you will be working with and complete these modules. You will be able to print a completion report for your records when all requirements have been met. The course does not have to be completed in one sitting and the modules may be completed in any order.

Scope of Requirements:

These requirements apply to all study team members. This includes faculty, staff, students, and any participant involved in performing the research with live vertebrate animals. Individuals may attend a training lecture offered by the IACUC or provide proof of training completion at another institution. For the training lectures, please contact the IACUC staff for scheduling or enrollment. If you will be providing proof of training at another institution, this confirmation must be sent to the IACUC from the official at the other institution. It should detail the course, date completed, and what general information was covered in the class(es) attended. The IACUC administrator will evaluate the provided information and confirm that this meets the requirement. There may be a need to provide OSU specific training, regardless of previous training.

Timing of Completion:

The IACUC will not approve Animal Care and Use Proposals (ACUP) or amendments until training has been completed for all new staff members identified. Participants cannot initiate work or be exposed to animals until training has been completed, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) enrollment in the Animal Handler Medical Surveillance Program has occurred, and the IACUC has provided documentation that the ACUP or amendment has been approved.

Documentation of Completion:

When all required modules are passed with 80% correct answers or better, CITI will send notification to the IACUC confirming completion of training requirements. This notification is sent automatically by the online training system. No additional documentation is required.

NSF RCR Requirements
The National Science Foundation requires RCR education for all students and post-docs supported through the NSF award. Principal Investigators will direct NSF-funded graduate students and post-docs to complete the on-line training and certification program (undergraduate students are not required per OSU policy to complete this on-line course; however PIs may make this a required part of their education).
