COE Installation Quality Bulletin

Installation Quality Bulletin Number: 04-08

To: All Installation Suppliers / Design Engineering Representatives / Quality Managers / Field Engineering Representatives

Date: Friday, September 3, 2004

From: QWEST Installation Quality Assurance

Subject: Restricted Use of ADC 12-Fiber Rip Cord Equipment Cables

Action Required:

YES: / Ö / NO:

Description of Bulletin:

Until further notice, the ADC 12-fiber ripcord equipment cables used in Qwest central office applications will no longer be procured. The 12-fiber cables are found in the Qwest Standard Configuration document, C-FIBER-CO_12PK. This Standard Configuration will be discontinued at this time. The cable construction is forcing an increase in the cost of installation effort and often results in cables being reordered. In addition, these cables have demonstrated an incompatibility with some of the existing fiber cable support systems in central offices.

Qwest AMC is currently addressing the fiber cable construction problems with ADC, but in the interim, Qwest Engineers will order multiple quad fiber cables instead of 12 pack fibers. The quad fiber cables are found in the Qwest Standard Configuration document, C-FIBER-CO_QUAD.

12 Pack Fiber Rip Cord Cable Issues:

·  The central member is too rigid, increasing the cable bend radius to 4.1 inches which completely eliminates fiber duct as a means of support for any number of 12 fiber cables. New fiber cable racks are then required, but can only be placed where space permits.

·  The ripcords are embedded deeply within the fiber cables making them inaccessible to the installer without risking damage to the insulation and conductors.

·  The central member is large and stiff, which prevents loosely snaking the fiber cable slack in overhead cable racks. This inability to distribute acceptable fiber cable slack will require the reordering of fiber cables with absolutely no slack.
