Install a door into an existing doorjamb

Write your answers and/or tick a box to check that you have done all the tasks to complete the job.

Prepare for work / Is your work area organised?
Are your power tools and equipment ready?
What personal protective equipment (PPE) will you need?
What hazards can be removed from your work area?
Measure and check the doorjamb / Measure and record the height of the doorframe.
Write down the width measurements of the doorframe. / Top:
Middle:
Floor:
Check for plumb in two directions.
Check the doorstops for plumb.
Check the opening for level.
Check the ground for level.
Check the doorjamb for square.

Prepare the door / Check the type and size of the door.
Remove any packaging.
Is the door is straight and flat? / Comments:
Check to see which way the door will hang.
If you are hanging a hinged door… / Check the door in the doorjamb. Allow for clearances.
Trim if necessary.
Mark and fit hinges on the door.
Screw the other half of the hinge onto doorjamb.
Make adjustment if needed for plumb and clearances.
Nail home.
Install the doorstops. Adjust if necessary.

If you are hanging a sliding door… / Prepare the jamb lining.
Install the sliding door track.
Prepare the sliding door.
Hang and adjust the sliding door.
Install the doorstops.
Furnish the sliding door.
Install the pelmet.
Fix the architraves / Use a gauge to mark a line around the jamb.
Remove arris from architrave.
Mark internal mitre.
Cut each stile and head.
Tack each piece temporarily to jamb.
Nail architrave into doorjamb (38 mm nails) and wall stud (50 mm nails).
Check architraves are flush – plane if needed.
Pin external mitre with small nails.

Furnish the door / Install the lock.
Put the handles on the door.
Clean up / Clean tools/equipment.
Store away reusable material and tools/equipment.
Tidy up work area.
