Get your recyclables ready! As we kick off yet another school year, we’re thrilled to announce [Insert name of school] will compete in national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful’s Recycle-Bowl, a national K-12 recycling competition which begins on Oct. 17 and culminates on Nov. 15, which is America Recycles Day. During the four-week competition, students will learn the ins and outs of recycling properly by trying to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper products.

Students, staff and administrators will track and report how much material is collected throughout the weeks of the competition and will be compared to the numbers reported from other K-12 schools across [your state]as well as the entire country. Participating schools have a chance to win prizes and national recognition.

The fun and engaging in-school competition willinvolve students, teachers, school administrators, school facility managers, PTA/PTO groups and local recycling advocates. Nearly 700,000 students and teachers from more than 1,265 schools across the nation competed in the 2015 Recycle-Bowl.

Are you looking for a fun and creative way to increase school recycling participation or maybe begin a school recycling program in your community? Recycle-Bowl, a nationwide K-12 school recycling competition, could be your ticket to success.

Keep America Beautiful’s, sixth annual, “Recycle-Bowl,” is a nationwide recycling competition for elementary, middle and high-school students. Recycle-Bowl was created to provide students with a fun, interactive way to learn about waste reduction and environmental responsibility through recycling at school.

Open to all schools, the recycling competition kicks offthis October and registration is now open on the Recycle-Bowl website at The competition runs from October 17 through November 15, culminating onAmerica Recycles Day. Participating schools will track and report how much recyclable material they collect for a chance to win a prize and national recognition.

At the close of the four-week competition, the school in each state that collects the most recyclable material per capita wins bragging rights – and will be listed on the Recycle-Bowl website. A national champion will then be chosen from the top statewide winners to receive a recycled content plastic bench for their school. And the school that wins the “most improved” category will win store credit to purchase recycling bins. Schools that collect material from the community will compete in a separate category. Educational recycling activities as well as templates for promotional materials (posters)are provided on-line.

Last year more than 1,265 schools around the country, representing nearly 700,000 students, participated – collecting more than 3.9 million pounds of recyclables.
