Saudek is Jeiwsh. DuringWorld War II, many of his family members died in Theresienstadt …………………..camp. Also his father Gustav was imprisoned in Theresin for three months.

Jan and his brother Karel survived children's concentration camp for youngsters. This camp was located near the present Polish – Czech……………... Fortunately, both brothers and their father survived these hard times of war and cruel concentration camps. His brother, twin Karel, is comic illustrator.

Jan's first camera was Kodak Baby Brownie. He had begun to shoot with it in 1950. Jan has ………………….also as print shop worker. Later he had begun to work with Flexaret 6x6. Important point of his life was ……………..to the United states in 1969, where he was supported in becoming professional photographer by …………..Hugh Edwards. Edwards was also director of photography at Chicago Art Institute.

At his artistic beginnings, his artwork was focused on children, youth and growing up. He took photographic series of ………….growing up and later captured the same youngsters at different ages. Due to the political …………..in socialistic Czechoslovakia, Saudek had to avoid attention of secret police. His artwork was different from what socialistic……………… expected. With its freedom of erotic expression or political themes of corruption, it was something provocative at that time. Police examined his photographic…………... Also his brother Karel ran into troubles with censorship and some of his underground works were reprinted in nineties.

In 1983 he got …………..to work as a freelance artist by Czech communist authorities.

Saudek is also interested in drawing and painting what influences his photography. Nudes or semi-nude figures surrounded by dark painted walls or bare …………..walls are characteristic for his compositions. Saudek is interested in ……………of opposite sexes. During 1990s, Saudek's compositions of…………., eroticism and ambiguous dream worlds were subject of attempts at …………..in the West. His photographs are also album……………, for example American alternative rock band Soul Asylum selected for its album Grave Dancer's Union photography depicting mother in white and probably her two children. Many of his photographs have hand -coloured versions.

Private life

Saudek, famous bohemian and lover, was born to be unpredictable and wild. His ……………….is often exhibitionistic. He was married to his first wife Maria from 1958 till 1970. She gave birth to his first two sons, Samuel and David. His love stories resulted to eight children. Usually there were no big ……………about divorces or break ups but his last break up with Sara Saudkova (she uses his surname despite the fact they were not married) is very unusual. Sara left Saudek with his own son and afterwards she gave …………..to four children. Currently he is living with his new……………, Pavla Houdkova, who gave birth to his son.
