Finding Research data & Open Resources
UTS:LIBRARY www.LIB.UTS.EDU.AU
Introduction
· Welcome – this is not intended to be an all-encompassing session, but will hopefully open your eyes to what the potential is with open data and other open resources. There is so much stuff out there!
· Note: while we will find some statistical info that is not our focus today. We have an excellent Statistics Study Guide for that
Finding Australian research dataResearch Data Australia
http://researchdata.ands.org.au/ / · Discovery service for Australian research data
· Can search by subject, researcher name, institution
· Locate where data is and conditions of access and use
· In some cases, you can download data. In most however you can only find out something actually exists and who to contact.
Data discovery services – find an archive or repository that might have data relevant to your research
Data Archives Directory
UTS Library > Research > Data Archives
https://www.lib.uts.edu.au/research/data-archives / · Searchable directory of Australian and International research data archives
· If you know of any we haven’t listed please get in touch!
Re3data.org
http://service.re3data.org/search/results?term= / · Registry of research data repositories from around the world
· Search for your subject, then follow the links to any relevant data archives to search for data
Open Access Directory of data repositories
http://oad.simmons.edu/oadwiki/Data_repositories / · Another discovery service – you will need to visit the actual archive listed to find data
The Directory of Open Access Repositories - OpenDOAR
http://www.opendoar.org/index.html / · Another discovery service – you will need to visit the actual archive listed to find data
Humanities and cultural data
HuNI (Humanities Networked Infrastructure)
https://staging.huni.net.au/#/search / · Australian collection of cultural datasets
· In its early days
· Can curate your own collections to share
Social Sciences
Australian Data Archive
http://www.ada.edu.au/
Accessing data instructions:
http://www.ada.edu.au/ada/data-access / · National service for the collection and preservation of digital research data, for the purposes of secondary analysis by academic researchers and other users.
· Quantitative, Qualitative, Historical, Longitudinal, Indigenous, Crime & Justice, International catalogues
· All visitors to the ADA Data Catalogue can browse and search the catalogue, view study and variable documentation (including frequencies) and download related material (questionnaires, codebooks, etc). Registered users can also analyse and visualise most data online and users who have completed the relevant undertaking form(s) can download entire studies or subsets of variables in a range of formats
Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (USA)
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu / · International consortium of about 700 academic institutions and research organisations
· ICPSR maintains a data archive of more than 500,000 files of research in the social sciences. It hosts 16 specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.
