Excellence:

William Mitchell Reid – (MUSIC - WINNER)

Ex-student of Columbia

William is an outstanding trumpeter;he worked on Winton Marsalis' project, Jazz at Lincoln Centre Swing Orchestra, which culminated in an incredible performance in the foyer of the Barbican in June.He also starred in the performance in June which saw THAMES students performing at a concert as part of the Spitalfield's Festival, earning huge applause for his work, particularly for his solo in the THAMES Saturday Music Centre Big Band. His work and commitment to music is simply excellent

Ayo Sotobu (SPORTS – RUNNER-UP)

Ayo is a quiet and determined student who strives for excellence in all that she does. She applies herself brilliantly, working closely with the other Sports Leaders to create fantastic opportunities for other students. Ayo is thoughtful and diligent and always thinks through what she is going to do and how she is going to do it, and as a result, younger students excel in her presence.

Yamin Mohammed (SPORTS – RUNNER UP)

Ex student of BGTC

Yamin is nominated for the Olympic value of Excellence as he successfully played Men’s Hockey at national league level when he was only 15 years old. He also demonstrates Excellenceon a daily basis with all the young people he coaches in his role as YA, encouraging them to excel in everything they do.He shows that excellence can inspire excellence from others and push the boundaries of what it is possible to achieve.

Friendship:

Antonia Salmon Earle (SPORTS - WINNER)

Antonia is a team player who always supports her colleagues, team mates and friends. She’s always ready tohelp with advice, developing other people’s skills wherever she can and inspiring confidence in others to do well. She has an infectious personality and this underpins her ability to put friendship at the heart of all she does.

Holly Osborne (SPORTS - RUNNER UP)

Throughout her role as a YA, Holly demonstrated great initiative by building friendships with other YA's from around Tower Hamlets. She went out of her

way to get to know students from other schools and worked effectively with them as partners in organising sporting events, creating exciting opportunities for other young people. She is incredibly popular with her peers and shows how friendship can make a real difference to other people’s lives.

Charlie Gibbs(MUSIC - RUNNER UP)

LangdonPark

Charlie is the cheery character who always asks how you are and tells you to have a good weekend. He is a friend to everyone, confident enough to welcome new people into the centre, thoughtful enough to look after people and even tells others when they have played well.He is the sort of person who, when asked to do even the most dreary task - such as set up a music stand or move some chairs, willdo so with grace. He is a positive chap and a pleasure to have around

Determination:

Grayce Richards(MUSIC - WINNER)

Ex-Stepney Greencoat

Grayce began learning how to play the oboe this year, and has done so well that she gave a performance of Lord of the Dance in the Saturday Music Centre Summer Concert. The fact that this was also Grayce's own arrangement adds a unique and special dimension to her success. Also a great singer and recorder player, her musical potential means she is pulled in many different directions, but she rarely misses a rehearsal. An exceptional student whose hard work and determination is inspirational to all.

Jessica Ho (SPORTS - RUNNER UP)

Jessica is a positive, focused leader amongst her peer group who always works hard. She enjoys succeedingin all that she does and she also encourages others to do well, leading by example. Thoughtful, bright and full of ideas – Jessica shows that determination can create positive changes in her own and others lives.

Maria is always willing to help and she is very driven to succeed. She is passionate about what she does, and her determination to overcome her natural shyness and put forward her views in challenging environments has been integral to her personal, and project successes.

Inspiration:

Kamal Guthmy (SPORTS - WINNER)

BGTC

Kamal is nominated for the Olympic value of Inspiration.He has a wonderfully bubbly and infectious personality, which helped him communicate many inspirational messages to the young people he has worked with. He quickly became a wonderful role model among the primary schools in Bethnal Green as he led assemblies and sporting events with great passion and enthusiasm.

An inspiring leader who ensures that everyone he works with benefits from the opportunities that are around them.

Nazeeb Ullah (MUSIC - RUNNER UP)

Morpeth

Nazeeb rarely misses a session of SMC;he works really hard, and is always prepared to promote the Centre positively. A very good public speaker (he is 10 years old!), THAMES invited Nazeeb to compere it's concerts and to be interviewed at other performances, including an interview with Claire Sweeney at Sadler's Wells where Nazeeb shone - stealing the show completely.Nazeeb is inspiring in all that he has achieved, and also in the way he uses his many talents to create positive opportunities.

Chiagoziem Nwosu (MUSIC - RUNNER UP)

Stepney Greencoat

Possibly the most impressive learning of a musical instrument at the SMC this year, this young lady learnt Alto Sax in record breaking time and improvised an inspiring solo in the Big Band at the Spitalfield's Festival in June. A really positive and pleasant young student, who is committed to improving her many musical talents. Chiagoziem shows that you can make significant progress quickly if you work hard and you are determined to succeed.

Courage:

Athia Shah (SPORTS - WINNER)

Ex student BGTC

Athia is nominated for the Olympic value of courage as she consistently demonstrated this in her role as a YA;persevering and pushing through challenges in her life to overcome her personal fears, such as public speaking, and become a great role model to all young people. More significantly,during a family bereavement, she demonstrated incredible courage and resolve, dealing with a very sad and stressful time in a mature and sensitive way. Her courage is very inspiring and will be integral to her ongoing successes in life.

Yvonne Akibemen (SPORTS - RUNNER UP)

Yvonne is a brave and courageous student who is always encouraging others to try new ideas and activities. Often the first person to get up and motivate others to get involved, she has been brilliant at teaching younger students to be confident and to believe in themselves, to try something new. Her intrepid spirit is courageousness at its best.

Laila Yasin (MUSIC - RUNNER UP)

Ex-Guardian Angels

Laila has shown great courage in sharing her many musical talents by singingin Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. She has taken many graded exams in flute and recorder and she wants to learn more instruments all of the time.She is due to have a painful brace fitted soon but she is determined to continue to play music and has even asked to take up stringed instruments in order to continue to learn should the flute get too painful. In short, Laila is a courageous, committed and very talented student.

Respect:

Zoe Alison (MUSIC – WINNER)

Ex-English Martyrs

Zoe never misses a session at the SMC and helps the parents association run a tuck shop. Zoe always arrives early at concerts to help the Parents Association set up stalls and is a very keen musician, playing many different instruments at the centre. Zoe deserves recognition for her mature approach to learning about music, and for contributing to everything she does with respect and empathy for those around her.

Sarah Elechi.(SPORTS - RUNNER UP)

Sarah is a respectful student who makes the most in her role as a Sports Leader. She is respectful toward everyone - including peers, members of staff and younger students - and as a result they respect her too. Sarah is a quiet student, however her nature and the way she works other students inspires them to listen to her and follow her example.

Maya Eadie-Catling (MUSIC - RUNNER UP)

Maya never misses an SMCsession unless it is totally unavoidable.She shows, daily, complete respect for everyone and everything the centre is trying to achieve.She always works impressively hard and often achieves more than originally thought possible. Always cheerful, always positive, Maya is a great role model for other young people.

Equality:

Jamie Burnett ( MUSIC – WINNER)

Bow Boys

Jamie is a really nice young man, mature beyond his years. He is very popular among his friends, and a talented drummer and guitarist. He manages to get the balance right between remaining "cool" with his peers but always respecting every aspect of the Saturday Music Centre. He will get involved with any project that is offered to him, playing music and leading ensembles in rehearsals and projects. This young musician deserves praise for leading by example in his peer group and for excelling in contributions to the Saturday Music Centre

Bevlyn Anyaoku-Clough (MUSIC - RUNNER UP)

St Mary’s and St Michaels

A leader among her peers, Bevlyn picks up learning a new instrument very quickly. She currently plays recorder, bassoon and clarinet, learning all three alongside each other. Bevlyn must be congratulated for seizing any opportunity that comes her way, working at them and enjoying them as much as possible.Bevlyn’s approach is - if an instrumentsounds good, she'll give it a go.

Dami is hardworking, conscientious and always demands the best of herself. She is incredibly talented and happily shares her talents with others. She is also totally committed to providing opportunities for other young people and helping them to be the best they can be. Dami demonstrates the ways in which we can ensure that opportunities are equally open for all.
