Initi@tive 2004. Modicon TSX Micro automation platform: offering versatility and openness

Modicon TSX Micro is a Simply Smart* product, compliments of Telemecanique.

The Modicon TSX Micro platform from Telemecanique is designed for implementing small and medium-sized control systems up to 248 I/O. It is suitable for all machines and processes, ranging from the simplest to those requiring rapid, powerful processing operations. This platform offers a complete and versatile range of over 40 application-specific modules, capable of supporting every control and automation function. Its varying performance levels, memory flexibility, modular configuration and openness with regard to the market’s communications standards – Ethernet TCP/IP, CANopen, ASInterface, etc. – all contribute to providing the perfect solution for processing any application.

Multispecialist PLC

For its programming functions Modicon TSX Micro uses a set of 4 languages conforming to standard IEC 61131-3, comprising Ladder Diagram (LD), Instruction list (IL), Structured Text (ST) and Sequential Function Chart (SFC). This means that you can choose the most suitable language for each function in the application to be developed, without reducing memory capacity or execution performance. These languages can also use all the resources offered by the Windows interface and are supported by an online help function that can be accessed at any stage during PLC setup.

In addition, the PL7 programming software comes with the application-specific screens required for configuration and adjustments as well as supervisory and diagnostics activities.

Each of the application-specific functions offers a compact, integrated, simple and effective solution. Counting, positioning, process control and safety are four of the standard functions offered by this range.

The counting function offers a wide selection of solutions with a variety of performance levels and modular designs: discrete modules with 2 x 500 Hz channels, 2 x 10 kHz channels integrated in the basic configuration and numerous counter modules up to 500 kHz, etc.

The positioning function, based on an SSI encoder module, provides a complete 1 MHz interface for a range of functions, including handling comparison, read/measure, modulo, and offset/recalibration functions.

The process control function can be accessed via an integrated specialised library. Depending on the command type, you can choose a direct analogue output or an adaptation using SERVO (discrete valve control) or PWM (pulse width modulation) blocks. There is also a fuzzy logic library available for non-linear procedures or those difficult to model.

The safety function covers emergency-stop monitoring and limit switch applications requiring safety category level 3 in accordance with standard EN 954-1. This module, which is integrated in the PLC, is based on a wired Preventa (XPS) safety relay and a discrete data acquisition function, providing full diagnostics for input contacts and output status in the safety system.

Open PLC

Whether distributing sensors in the most cost-effective manner, connecting intelligent equipment or integrating with an intranet, Modicon TSX Micro favours an open standard, offering you total freedom of choice.

Ethernet

This product is also easily integrated into local or remote architectures using the universally recognised Modbus protocol, supported on Ethernet TCP/IP.

The Ethernet TCP/IP modules are also equipped with a ready-to-use web server, operating as a graphic interface for accessing your application’s configuration, diagnostics and adjustment activities. The operator can also use the graphic library to develop web pages - supervision pages, diagnostics pages, documentation, etc. - which are then stored using the 8 Mb memory capacity available. A simple Internet browser ensures secure and transparent access to PLC data via a network or modem, providing you with a real HMI. This transparency forms the basis for all the Transparent Ready  architectures developed by Schneider Electric.

CANopen

Modicon TSX Micro has a CANopen master module in PCMCIA format for connecting intelligent equipment. This module can be inserted directly in the CPU, providing a compact solution. Numerous Telemecanique products can be connected up, including Altivar variable speed drives, Lexium and Twin Line drives, U model Tesys motor starters, Advantys I/O, etc.

AS-Interface

To implement a more cost-effective distributed wiring solution, an AS-Interface master module is used for connecting sensors and actuators (up to a maximum of 31 slaves over a single cable (200 m max.), allowing both power and data transfer).

Main technical features:

-multitask system (MAST/FAST/EVT)

-execution time: 0.15 µs per instruction

-internal memory range from 22 to 40 Kb, expandable up to 256 Kb by inserting a PCMCIA card

-supply voltage: 24 VDC or 230 VAC

-up to 248 discrete in rack I/O

-up to 141 analogue I/O

-granularity of I/O modules: 2 to 64 channels

-I/O connected using removable screw terminals or HE10 connectors

-basic configuration with integrated I/O and application-specific functions

-multiprotocol serial communication port (Modbus master/slave, Uni-Telway, ASCII)

-display unit on front panel used to display data for a variety of purposes

-etc.

*Simply Smart: more ingenuity and intelligence for continually improving ease of use.
