Course components

VIDEO EPISODES: Organized into ten major topic areas, the 26 half-hour episodes (or lessons) of The Human Condition offer a comprehensive view of health care in the world today – going beyond simple explanations of the major health issues facing society, to an analysis of the cost factors driving health care treatment options, and an exploration of the relationship between wellness education, preventive medicine, fitness and long term health.

CORRELATED TEXTBOOK: A carefully correlated college-level textbook, Essential Concepts for Healthy Living by Alters and Schiff (Jones & Bartlett Publishing Company, Boston, MA) has been published for use with The Human Condition telecourse. Its OPTIONAL companion workbook contains self-assessment activities that can be completed by students as assigned in the study guide for the student’s own enlightenment. Some students may not receive the companion book when purchasing used books. Readings in the textbook are assigned within each lesson of the study guide.

STUDY GUIDE: The Human Condition Study Guide written by Wendy Schiff (Jones & Bartlett Publishing Company, Boston, MA), is especially designed to help the student gain maximum benefit from the coordinated instructional system. Each lesson in the study guide contains the following segments:

  • A set of Learning Objectives that serve as benchmarks for students’ study of The Human Condition
  • An Overview of each episode, which highlights the significant concepts and points of view contained in that episode.
  • Assignments that include reading in chapters or relevant sections of the Alters/Schiff text, Essential Concepts for Healthy Living, for additional information concerning the topics presented in the video episodes. Each lesson in ********For example, on page 18 of the study guide for lesson 4 under ASSIGNMENTS it says to ready Chapter 3 of the textbook; on page 24 in lesson 5 it says to read Chapter 4 of the text. Any suggested assignments at the end of each textbook chapter should be completed. You only have 16 text chapters that will be read as assigned in the 26 lessons of the study guide.
  • Key Terms that provide definitions of terms essential for students’ understanding of the language of personal health and the human condition.
  • A Self-Test that provides a series of questions to evaluate the student’s understanding of the material in each episode and text chapter and provide a method of review.
  • Expanded Analysis, which provides questions or activities that enable students to reflect on their learning and apply the concepts learned in each episode to other aspects of their lives.

COURSE EVALUATION

There will be four tests composed of 50 multiple choice

questions, each worth two points. Each of the four tests will be worth a total of one hundred points. The source of test questions will come from any part of the study guide lessons, videos, and all of the assigned reading in the text. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE READING THE TEXT MATERIAL SPECIFICALLY ASSIGNED FOR EACH LESSON. All tests must be taken during the week that they are scheduled. In the event that the student fails to keep up with scheduled tests the instructor must be contacted no later than one week from the scheduled test with explanation of extenuating circumstances or the student may be dropped. At the time of contact the instructor will determine if said test may be taken for full or partial credit. NO STUDENT MAY MISS AND MAKE UP MORE THAN ONE TEST. Any approved makeup tests must be taken the same week as Test 4. As your instructor I would strongly recommend that you do not wait until the last day to take the test. The LRC closes on Fridays at 3:00 PM and doesn’t reopen; you must be there no later than 2:00 PM.

FAILURE TO REMAIN ON SCHEDULE MAY RESULT IN THE STUDENT BEING DROPPED FROM THE COURSE BUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPPING YOU FROM THIS CLASS. ANY ARRANGEMENTS FOR MAKEUP TESTS MUST BE MADE WITHIN ONE WEEK FOLLOWING THE TEST WEEK. NO STUDENT IS DROPPED BY THE INSTRUCTOR PAST THE FIRST TEST.

Test Schedule and Content

Test Two covers study guide lessons seven through thirteen and must be taken during the week of Oct. 9th (eighth week of class).

Test Three covers study guide lessons fourteen through twenty and must be taken during the week of Nov. 6th(twelfth week of class).

This final test and all other makeup tests,IF APPROVED, must be taken no later than Friday, Dec. 8th. Test 4 is to be taken before finals began but it will not be graded until during finals week.

VIDEO PROGRAMS

Each student must check out all twenty-six of The Human Condition videos from MineralAreaCollege’s Learning Resource Center (LRC) at the beginning of the semester. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that all videos required for each test be viewable – there are some tapes/DVDs with lessons missing that should be returned to the LRC and exchanged for a complete copy.

Using The Human Condition Study Guide each student should thoroughly acquaint himself or herself with the overall telecourse setup including the LEARNING OBJECTIVES, OVERVIEW, ASSIGNMENTS, KEY TERMS, AND VIDEO VIEWING QUESTIONS. After completion of all information for each lesson the student should take the SELF TEST (answer keys begin on page 161 of the study guide). The source of questions for each test may come from all text readings or study guide terms as well as information from each video.

TESTING LOCATION

Tests will be available during the week scheduled for each of the four tests in the MACLearningCenter. Students may test during the Center’s open hours as their schedules allow as long as each test is completed during the scheduled week. Students are reminded that to take a test in the LRC they must show a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or MAC ID. As previously stated material for test questions may come from the videos, the study guide lessons, and from the text reading assignments. Note that sample multiple choice and short answer questions are located at the end of each unit. You may see the same or similar questions on the four tests for this course. At any time that you have questions get in touch with your instructor for additional help.
