Information for contestants

When and where will the contestbe held?

The contest will be held inthe Durban City Hall on Wednesday 8thJuly.

The individual contest will start at 10:00 a.m and end at 12.00. The team contest will start at 14:00 and end at 15.00.

The starting time and the ending times will be clearly announced.

What may I take with me into the competition hall?

You can take only writing and drawing instruments such as pens, pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, a ruler and compasses into the competition room. You may not take in a hand held calculator, a cell phone, electronic devises, a briefcase, a protractor, books, notes, tables, papers or any other written material.

How do I find my seat?

Your table will be labeled with your name and ID code. Your team host and the invigilators will assist you to find your seat. Once you have found your place, please sit down and wait quietly for the signal to start.

What will be provided?

On your table you will find a folder labeled with your ID code containing:

  • the contest problems in the language you team leader requested,
  • two sheets of paper on which you may work,
  • something to eat and drink during the contest

Do not open your contest problems before the signal to start is given.

Where and how do I write my solutions?

Write your solutions on the contest paper or answer sheet. Do not forget to fill in your ID code and your name. It is in your interest to work neatly.

What if I need more blank sheets of paper?

If you need more blank sheets ofpaper, please raise your hand. One of the invigilatorswill give you two more sheets of paper.

What if I have a question about one or more of the problems?

Questions about the problems may be brought up only during the first 30 minutes. Please raise your hand and one of the invigilatorswill attend to you.

What if I need more water to drink? What if I need to go to the rest room or feel sick?

If you need water, raise your hand. If you have to go to the rest room, just raise your hand to ask permission. In case of an emergency or illness, raise your hand to get help.

How do I know how much time is left?

Wall clocks will be visible from your seat. The contest administrator will announce the beginning of the last 10-minute period and of the last 3-minute period.

What do I do when the exam is over?

Once the end of the contest is announced, you must stop writing immediately. The invigilatorswill collect your papers. You must also hand in the paper on which you worked.

What if I finish the exam early?

If you finish your work before the end of the contest,you may raise your hand to tell the invigilator that you have finished the exam and you want to leave the room. After leaving the contest hall, you will not be allowed to return. After the last 10-minute warning is announced, you will have to wait quietly in your place until the end. You will not be allowed to leave the room during the first 60 minutes of both contests.

What may I take with me out of the competition hall?

Apart from the contest problems, you are not allowed to take out of the room any materials other than those that you brought in.
