Instructions: Choose one of the four choices below for the individual poetry project. Students have over one week to complete the project by Tuesday, February 27th. Guidance will be provided in the classroom. Time is available during study hall to work on the project. Students need to complete the project at home. Students will be given tips on how to provide a quality presentation. Mrs. Kelly and Ms. Kuyper are available to preview rough drafts, prior to the due date. Early completion is encouraged. Projects will be accepted February 26th and 27th.

Each project will have a rubric for scoring. Total Points = 80. Project = 70 points, and Presentation = 10 points.

  1. Write your own poem: Choose one of the six types of poems we have discussed for the unit: ode, sonnet, epic poem, ballad, lyric poem, and free verse poem. Once you have chosen which poem you want to write, follow the instructions on how to write that poem. You will be graded on the correct structure and accuracy of your poem. Points will be taken away for an incorrectly written poem. The poem can be about anything you want, but it must be approved by Ms. Kuyper before you write. You will turn in a copy of your poem to Ms. Kuyper after you present for a grade.
  2. Memorize your own poem: Choose a poem to memorize and present to the class. The poem must be between 10-20 lines long. The poem must be written by one of the authors listed on the Poetry Reading Log. Once you have found a poem, print it out and show the poem to Ms. Kuyper. You must memorize the entire poem for your presentation. You will turn in a copy of our poem so Ms. Kuyper can ensure you memorized it.
  3. Illustrate a poem:Choose a poem from the poetry book you read for your Reading Log. Write one paragraph explaining the meaning of the poem. You will glue this to the back of your illustration and read it out loud when you present. You will draw a picture illustrating the meaning of the poem. The picture must cover the entire page and must be in color. You can make an illustration with colored pencils, crayons, water color, paints, etc. You will turn in a copy of your poem, the one paragraph about the meaning, and the illustration for a grade.
  4. Perform a poem with a friend:Choose a poem from the book you read for your Poetry Reading Log or a Two Voice Poem. The poem must be between 10-20 lines long. One of you can recite the poem from memory while the other person acts it out, or both of you can recite and perform together. You must get the poem approved by Ms. Kuyper before you begin rehearsing. You must memorize the poem and rehearse it together before you perform. You must turn in a copy of your poem to Ms. Kuyper for a grade.
