Historical or Current Event Newspaper/Magazine Assignment

Choose one of the following topics and perform the following tasks:

·  Research the event you choose from Mr. Underwood’s list thoroughly. (We will meet in the Library Tuesday 3/6— Fri 3/9 AND Mr. Underwood’s room, B108, Monday 3/12 – Friday 3/16.) ***Remember that OGTs are the week of the 12th-16th. You have an adjusted schedule, which can be found on the back of this sheet.

·  Analyze how your event relates to what you have learned about the Constitution. Explain in your article how the event described illustrates topics addressed in our Constitution.

·  I would prefer that your group choose a current event rather than a historical event because we have spent class time discussing modern events in the Middle East. If you chose an event that had a Middle Eastern tie or a link to A Thousand Splendid Suns or Persepolis, that would be wonderful!

·  Create a newspaper or magazine based around the event you have chosen. We have an awesome program called InDesign that will help you create the newspaper/magazine. Type your article in Microsoft Word AND SAVE it, and Miss Gorsuch will show you how to transfer in into InDesign. Your newspaper or magazine should be set during the time period in which the event took place. If you would prefer, you can create a newspaper on the anniversary of the event. (For example, if the event took place during the summer of 1964, your newspaper can commemorate the 20th anniversary of the event and can be written as if it is from the summer of 1984.)

·  All articles must have citations and be referenced in the Works Cited to earn a passing grade for my class.

·  Cover the event from three different perspectives in the newspaper, for example:

o  A feature article

o  A human interest article

o  A letter to the editor

o  An editorial

o  A follow-up article

o  A political cartoon (mandatory)

§  For this category, each group member should choose a different perspective to write about their event. For example, one group member may choose to write a feature article; one group member may write a letter to the editor, and one may create the political cartoon.

·  Have at least 3 unrelated articles from the same time period, for example:

o  A sports story

o  A movie/play review

o  A human interest article

o  A lifestyle article: fashion, cooking, entertainment

§  Again, for this category each group member should choose a different perspective to write about their event. For example, one group member may choose to write a play review; one group member may write a sports story, and one may write an article on fashion.

·  All articles must include a picture with a caption; your articles must also include a title with a byline, so I know who wrote the story. Because you are using research, the proper citation format is the majority of your grade.

·  There should be no excess white space in your newspaper/magazine. Your group might also choose to include weather reports, comic strips, advertisements, horoscopes, song lists, movie lists, award winners, etc. to complete your newspaper or magazine.

·  Provide your Works Cited on the back, bottom half of your newspaper or magazine.

·  Be prepared to briefly explain the event to the class and show your newspaper or magazine to the class.

Mr. Underwood will be grading the content of your newspaper, while I will be grading the written portion of the assignment; I will be focusing on proper citation skills and grammar.
