Orr & Co., 1839). 8vo, xxix, frontis plate of author, 28 full-page steel engravings with India paper mounts and over 300 smaller engravings, with all designers and engravers acknowledged. Leather binding, AEG, gilt title and boards. David Bland in his History of Book Publication cites this as one of the finest productions of the period. Toinet, No. 390. $200 I have an identical copy that lacks only the frontis plate of the author. $150

6.Bernardin de Saint Pierre, J. H. A Voyage to the Isle of France The Isle of Bourbon, and the Cape of Good Hope with Observations and Reflections upon Nature and Mankind; to which is added Some Account of the Author (London, J. Cundee, Ivy Lane, 1800). 2nd English edn, 8vo, xx, 334 pp, beautifully rebound in half burgundy roan leather, marbled boards, spine ornately gilt with five raised bands and fleurons in each compartment, gilt title, and covers gilt ruled. An account of this French writer’s travel to Mauritius in 1769-1770. A gorgeous book. $750

11.Cleveland, Richard J. A Narrative of Voyages and Commercial Enterprises (Cambridge, John Owen, 1842). 1st edn, 12 mo, two volumes. Vol. 1, xvi, 249 pp; Vol. 2, viii, 240 pp. Both volumes beautifully rebound in ½ leather, marbled boards, gilt ruled boards, and lettering, five raised bands with fleurons on spine, some foxing. A gorgeous set and rare first edition of this important memoir bya famous Salem sea captain’s voyages to the East including Bourbon, South African Batavia, Calcutta, China, etc. Cleveland was in Ile de France three times: June-November 1793; April 1794; and July 1799-March 1800. The memoir also includes his passages along California and the Northwest coast of America in 1799-1801, and 1803-04. $1000

17.de Mahy, Francois. Autour de l’ile Bourbon et de Madagascar (Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1891). 1st edn, 8vo, 291 pp. This is an odd book. Pages 1-178 chronicle a trip from France to Bourbon and Madagascar and back in 1885. Pages 28-32, and 169 are in Seychelles; 35-54 and 163-167 are in Bourbon; and 57-160 Madagascar. Pages 179-290 detail an earlier trip in 1876, where a proof-reader would have helped! Pages 180-192 are missing though I don’t think they were ever included in the original binding; on p. 207 the date is given as 1871. Pages 207-218 are about Aden; 227-232 and 278-279 about Seychelles;and 236-278 Bourbon. The book has been beautifully rebound in half-calf with marbled boards and endpapers. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author. $100 as is.

A very rare chart of these remote islands off the northern coast of Mozambique, with rhumb lines, soundings, and a half compass rose. Small villages are indicated on each island. $250

56.Bellin, Jacques N. Plan de la Ville de Cochin, from Abbe Prevost, L’Histoire Generale des Voyages, vol. 9 (Paris, 1759). 10 ½ x 7 inches, b/w, copperplate engraving with compass rose. A birds’ eye view of this historic island on the Malabar Coast with many buildings, ships, vegetation, and the famous fishing nets at the north end of the island (they’re still there!). $125

60.Grundemann, R. Five maps on a single sheet: Madagaskar, Die Stadtteile von Antananarivo, Die Provinzen Imerina und Betsileo, Transvaal, and Hermannse Mission im Kraise Pretoria and Rustenbg (Leipzig, 1902). All five maps are of German missions in South African and Madagascar. 14 ¾ x 9 ¼ inches, full color. $25

61.(Reunion). Levasseur, Victor. Ile de La Reunion. Engraved by A. Piat for Levasseur’s Atlas National Illustre (Paris, 1847). 17 x 12 inches, steel engraving, outline color. There are about 24 lines of statistical information at the bottom. The map is beautifully decorative with insets of Parny and Bertin, fashionable dwellings, seascapes, volcanic peaks, elaborate flora, mother and child, etc. There is accompanying text from the Atlas. $100

65.Sanson de Abbeville, N. Two maps on a single sheet. Partie du Zanguebar ou Sont les costes d’Ajan et d’Abex., 7 ¼ x 7 inches; and Le Zanguebar, 7 ¼ x 4 ½ inches, copperplate engraving, outline color; both maps have decorative cartouches, and are ruled on all four sides. The entire sheet measures 11 ¾ x 7 ¼ inches. (Paris, c. 1683). The first map is of the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa and the East African coast as far South as Pata; the second map is of the East African (Zanguebar) coast from Pata south to Sofala in Mozambique. Pemba, Zanzibar, Monfia, the Comoros and other islands are shown with little suggestion of their actual size and at times place. Sanson was the Geographe Ordinaire du Roi to Louis XIII, and his work represents the best of 17th century French cartography. $275

A highly detailed birds-eye view of the island including the fortress, the parade, other buildings, hills, and flora, with many ships at sea. Excellent condition. $175
