Independent Poetry Study

The assignment for your poetry unit will be a poetry booklet. This will be completed through independent study and limited class time for research in the library. The following are the expectations and the tasks you will complete to make your poetry booklet.

Expectations

By the end of this I.S.U. students will:

  • read and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of literary and informational texts using a wide range of strategies to construct meaning
  • recognize a variety of text forms and stylistic elements and demonstrate understanding of how they help communicate meaning
  • generate, gather and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience
  • draft and revise writing, using a variety of informational, literary and graphic forms and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience
  • use editing proofreading and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions to correct errors, refine expression and presentworkeffectively
  • demonstrate an understanding of a variety of media texts

Assignment Tasks

1. Introductory Poem: This poem will serve as a means to introduce yourself and will begin and end with the following line:

I am......

In between, you should write four truthful statements about yourself and four untruths. The idea is the mix them up so that telling the truth from fiction is difficult to decipher. Example:

I am Mrs. More

That=s not my real name though,

I=ve got three well behaved children.

My favourite sport is hockey.

I love to mark lots of essays

and I have many to do.

I am a rink rat

with a dog and a cat,

two hamsters and a guinea pig too

my house is literally a zoo

I am Mrs. More

Be sure to include an interesting illustration with your Introductory Poem.

2. Haiku Poetry: Haiku is Japanese poetry that follows a specific pattern. It has seventeen syllables in just three lines. Line one consists of five syllables, line two seven syllables and line three five syllables. It is a short poem that captures a moment in nature. Example:

Nature

A bitter morning

Sparrows sitting together

Trying to keep warm.

Write two of your own Haiku poems. Be sure to give each one a title and illustrate each one as well.

3. Choose one poem from each of the 1700's and 1800's and three poems the 1900's to current times, and complete the following:

$Include a copy of each of the five poems you have chosen.

$Provide some information on the poet who wrote each of the poems. Your information should include where the poet is from and when he or she lived. Nothing else is required.

$Analyse each poem. For your analysis, be sure to complete the following:

-Discuss the specific meaning or overall message of each of the poems.

-Comment on the poet=s use of language. Refer to the words and or phrases that the poet uses to convey a specific feeling and or mood.

-Comment on the use of imagery or other devices the poet uses to convey a message and or feeling (simile, metaphor, personification).

-How might you or someone you know relate to the poem?

-Does this poem have any historical relevance? If so, explain it.

  • The poems from the 1900s to the present,all three must be Canadian poets.

4. Choose one poem that you enjoy and that may have some kind of importance to you. Copy the poem onto a page and, in a paragraph, explain why you like the poem. You might want to consider how the poem relates to your life in some way.

5. Write two poems of your own. Your poems should be ten to twelve lines in length. Be sure to give your poems a title and illustrate each one.

6. Choose a song that you enjoy and write out the lyrics. In a paragraph, explain what the song is about and describe some the images that the song relays. Be sure to comment on why you chose this particular song. Create a collage of pictures or words that you feel relate to your song.

7. Put all of your selections together and submit them by the due date. Your submission should include a proper title page, table of contents, and a works sited. Organize your ISU so that each section is clearly identified by a separate title page. Remember that your works cited should include all the books, articles, and internet sources you used for your poems, analysis and pictures.
