Increase of 0.3% in the Consumer Price Index, October 2017

  • The Consumer Price Index increased 0.3% in October 2017 compared to September 2017. It was 100.6 points, compared to 100.3 points in the previous month (base: average 2016 = 100.0 points). The consumer price index excluding vegetables and fruit and the consumer price index excluding energy are also increased 0.3% each and were 100.5 and 100.4 points, respectively. The consumer price index excluding housingincreased 0.4% and was 99.8 points.
  • Prices of the following items increased in particular: clothing and footwear 6.1% and fresh vegetables 3.2%.
  • Prices of the following items decreased in particular: fresh fruit 1.1% and furniture and household equipment 0.6%.
  • Since the start of the year, the consumer price index increased 0.6%,the consumer price index excluding vegetables and fruit and the consumer price index excluding energy increased 0.4% each;in contrast the consumer price index excluding housing decreased 0.1%.
  • Over the past 12 months (October 2017 compared to October 2016), the consumer price indexincreased 0.2%. The consumer price index excluding vegetables and fruitis also increased 0.2%; in contrastthe consumer price index excluding energy remained unchanged and the consumer priceindex excluding housing decreased 0.4%.
  • The seasonally adjusted consumer price indexin October 2017 increased 0.2%, the seasonally adjusted consumer price indexexcluding vegetables, fruit and housing increased 0.1% and the seasonally adjusted consumer price index excluding housing remained unchanged.
  • Based on the trend data for the period July 2017 – October 2017, the annual pace of increase in the consumer price index was 0.3%;in contrast,for theconsumer price index excluding housing and for the consumer price index excluding vegetables, fruit and housing remained unchanged.

Major Changes in Primary Consumption Items

Food (excluding vegetables and fruit)

The food price index remained increased 0.3%.

The following increased in particular:prepared vegetable salads(6.6%),pork(4.6%),jam, honey and confiture(4.0%),sabbath loaf(3.3%),malt beer(2.7%),ice cream(2.6%),wafers(2.2%),ground coffee(2.2%),dough and pastry products (frozen)(1.7%),sweets and chocolate(1.7%),beef, minced(1.6%),cultured milk and yogurt(1.5%),tahini(1.5%),raw rice(1.2%),other special bread(1.1%),wine(1.1%),beef, fresh(1.0%) and white cheese spread(1.0%).

The following decreased in particular:crackers (various)(1.7%),chicken and parts thereof(1.6%),beef, internal parts(1.5%),salt(1.3%) and prepared fish products(1.1%).

Vegetables and Fruit

The vegetables and fruit index increased 1.4%.

The fresh vegetables index increased 3.2%; in contrast the fresh fruit index decreased 1.1%.The frozen, pickled and canned vegetables index increased 1.2% andthe dried andcanned fruit index increased 0.4%.

Among the fresh vegetables, the following increased in particular: fennel(increased 34.0% compared to May 2017), tomatoes(7.8%),squash(6.2%),broccoli(5.4%),peppers(5.1%),carrots(5.0%),onions(4.6%),leaf vegetables(4.5%),beets(4.0%),cucumbers(3.5%),garlic(2.7%) and culinary herbs(1.2%).

The following decreased in particular: kohlrabi(9.4%),cauliflower(5.0%),radishes(3.9%),eggplant(3.7%) and cabbage(3.4%).

Among the fresh fruit, the following decreased in particular:avocados(16.2%),kiwi(decreased 16.5% compared to June 2017), bananas(15.2%),clementine(11.1%),oranges(9.8%),lemons(4.8%) and pomegranates(1.6%).

The following increased in particular: grapefruit(increased 10.6% compared to May 2017),table grapes(18.4%),peaches(18.1%),plums(9.2%),sugar melons(6.5%),apples(1.9%) and persimmons(increased 1.4% compared to March 2017).

Among the processed vegetables and fruit, the following increased in particular: canned tomatoes and tomato puree(2.3%),pickled vegetables(2.3%),frozen vegetables(2.2%),dried fruit(2.0%) and walnuts and pistachio nuts(1.5%).

The following decreased in particular:almonds(2.3%) and seeds(1.9%).

Housing

The housing price index remained unchanged.

The owned dwellings services index and the rent index increased 0.1%, each.

Owned Dwellings Services

The owned dwellings services index showed anincrease in October2017 compared to September 2017. This increase reflects the changes in rental prices set in contracts signed in September 2017–October2017, compared to contracts signed in August 2017–September 2017.

Additional Housing Market Indicators Not Included in the Consumer Price Index[1]

Prices of Dwellings (Table 6.1 in Price Statistics Monthly, Consumer Price Index, Housing Section)

A comparison of transactions carried out during August 2017–September2017, compared to transactions carried out during July 2017 – August 2017, showed that dwelling prices increased 0.4%. This decrease reflects price changes with the deduction of changes in quality of the dwellings in the mix and in the dwelling type. The datum is not final because additional transactions were carried out during this period but not yet reported. A comparison of transactions carried out during August 2017 – September2017, compared to transactions carried out during August 2016 – September2016, showed a price increase of 4.2%.

Average Prices of Owned Dwellings (Tables 6.2–6.3 in Price Statistics Monthly, Consumer Price Index, Housing Section)

The average nationwide price of transactions carried out during the third quarter of 2017 was 1,473,300 NIS, as compared to the average price during the second quarter of 2017, which was 1,466,100 NIS. This increase (0.5%) reflects both the change in price level and the changes in quality and size of the dwellings sold.

Dwelling Maintenance

The dwelling maintenance index increased 0.2%.

The following increased in particular:gas (2.1%), kerosene and diesel oil for heating(2.0%) and laundry detergent, cleaning materials, and pesticides(1.4%).

Furniture and Household Equipment

The furniture and household equipment index decreased 0.6%.

The following decreased in particular: outdoor furniture(6.2%), bedding and towels(3.6%), deep freezer(2.4%), home decorations(2.2%), kitchen accessories(2.1%), miscellaneous cleaning and maintenance utensils(1.3%), serving dishes and storage containers(1.2%) and mugs, cups, and glasses(1.1%).

The following increased in particular: heating stoves(7.2%), dressers(2.3%), buffets(1.2%) and chairs(1.2%).

Clothing and Footwear

The clothing and footwear index increased 6.1%; the seasonally adjusted index increased 0.8%.

The clothing index increased 6.8% and the footwear index increased 4.5%.

Among clothing items, the followingincreased in particular:sports and exercise clothes(9.9%), outerwear(7.5%),underwear (5.1%) and miscellaneous clothing such ashats, scarves, and ties(4.9%).

Among footwear items, the following increased in particular:women‘s footwear (9.8%) and children‘s footwear (2.9%).

Health

The health index increased 0.1%.

The following increased in particular: fashion sunglasses(2.5%).

The following decreased in particular: lenses and frames for prescription glasses(1.0%).

Education, Culture and Entertainment

The education, culture and entertainment index decreased 0.1%.

The education services index increased 0.1%; in contrast the culture and entertainment index decreased 0.3%.

Note that in October 2017, a direct measurement of prices of academic education at universities and colleges was conducted for the school year 2017/2018. Compared to the previous school year, 2016/2017, tuition at academic institutions increased 0.3%.

The following decreased in particular: recreation, holidays and trips(2.4%),compact disks and DVD films(1.4%),camping equipment and accessories(1.2%) and writing and office supplies(1.0%).

The following increased in particular: tickets or subscription to sporting event(1.3%).

Transport and Communication

The transport and communication index increased 0.2%.

The transport index increased 0.3%;in contrast the communication index decreased 0.1%.

The following increased in particular:car rental for domestic travel(3.0%),vehicle fuel and lubricants(1.3%) and hauling services(1.1%).

The following decreased in particular: phone products(1.4%).

Miscellaneous

The miscellaneous index increased 0.2%.

The following increased in particular: creams, perfume, and facial products(1.4%),diapering products and accessories for babies(1.3%),shaving accessories, shaving creams, and hair removal(1.0%) and toilet paper, tissues and wipes(1.0%).

The following decreased in particular: jewellery(1.7%).
