At the SG 16 meeting (Geneva, 14-24 November 2006) a contribution was received from China on the subject of a streaming service termed “TV Service Emulation” (COM 16 – C54 – E).
TV Service Emulation refers to mimicking a TV network in order to support legacy terminals connected through a gateway to an IP network. All TV services remain available and identical (i.e.,with the same ergonomics), such that end users are unaware that they are not connected to a TV network.
TV Service Emulation is distinct and separate from PSTN/ISDN emulation/simulation.
This contribution proposes that Q22 undertake study of TV Service Emulation including the definition of TV Service Emulation, IP multicast technologies, and IP encapsulation of TS or ISMA streaming. It is considered that these three subjects are widely related with IPTV FG WG4, Q3/13 since IPTV, streaming service, NGN based IPTV are being progressed in IPTV FG, SG 13 and SG16.
For IP, multicast technologies, including transport layer multicast and application layer multicast, are key technologies of a streaming service. Q22 proposes to progress this with IPTV FG WG4 as we are aware that IPTV FG WG4 is developing multicast technologies, which is closely related with streaming service multicast.
The IPTV FG and Q3/13 are also invited to consider how it might help SG 16 to progress this proposal. SG16 wishes to avoid duplication of efforts, whilst ensuring harmonization among all emerging solutions and interested parties.
