BUILDING MATERIALS

SPRING 2012

COURSE DESCRIPTION/ OBJECTIVES:

Building Materials is a course creating consciousness about materials and their use in Interior Architecture. In this course, the students are informed on significant issues such as the properties of different kind of materials, their combinations, preparation of material board, communication with drawings and material applications, etc. The aim of this course is to define the Interior Architecture as a profession expressing the role of the Interior Architect within the application or production, through analysis of design, selection of material and detailing parameters forming the space structure. The other important factor is to show students that; interior architects should have their responsibilities in professional life during their roles in design or application processes, such as considering the appropriateness of the materials.

* Please be aware that attendance lower than 70% will be graded as NA!

TERM PROJECT I & II:

Students are expected to work on Term Project I & II simultaneously.

Term Project I:

Each student is expected to study one of the following materials:

  • Wood
  • Stone
  • Metal
  • Glass

Students are expected to conduct a library research and select examples of projects (at least 4 different projects) which will demonstrateuse of the same material on thefollowing surfaces:

  1. Ceiling
  2. Wall (interior)
  3. Floor
  4. Façade (exterior)
  5. Stair
  6. Furniture

The format of the study is predeterminedand can be downloaded as an A3 sheet from the web site of the course. Using this A3 sheet students’ study should include:

  • Ilustrations of the selected examples
  • Comments/ analysis of the selected examples
  • Source* of the Illustrations (journal or book Title; Volume and/ or Year; Page)

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: INTERNET SOURCES ARE NOT ALLOWED FOR THIS PROJECT!

Term Project II:

Each student is expected to selectan actual spaceand study use of different materials on the following surfaces:

  1. Ceiling
  2. Wall (interior)
  3. Floor
  4. Façade (exterior)
  5. Stair
  6. Furniture

The format of the study is predetermined and can be downloaded as an A3 sheet from the web site of the course. Using this A3 sheet students’ study should include:

  • Ilustrations of the selected areas/ materials
  • Comments/ analysis of the selected areas/ materials
  • Information on the selected actual space
