Glossary of terms

Unit 1
Term / Image / Utility
Personal computer / / A computer is a general purpose electronic device that can be programmed to serve multiple needs. The personal computer is meant to be used at home.
Integrated Circuits / / Also referred to as microchips. They are a set of electronic circuits on one small plate or chip. They are part of bigger devices like computers.
Motherboard / / As the computer's main integrated circuits board, it makes it possible for the processor, memory, graphics card, sound card, storage controllers, peripherals and so on to be connected.
Hardware / / Physical parts that form a computer or other electronic device: (the display, the keyboard, the CPU (Central Processing Unit), etc.
Software / / Non-physical parts of the computer, such as programs, applications and stored data that allow making use of the system.
Unit 2
Chipset / / Manages operation and communication of the motherboard with the rest of the computer components.
Connector / / All the internal or external slots, sockets or buses that allow you to connect parts of the computer between and amongst them.
Processor/CPU / / Hardware part within a computer that carries out the instructions of a computer program and input/output operations of the system.
CPU cooler / / They keep an adequate temperature for the processor and thus a good working order for the system as a whole.
RAM Modules / / They contain and allow you to connect the RAM memory to the memory slots in a motherboard.
Expansion slots / / Physical zones where devices such as the graphics card, the network card or others connect to the motherboard.
External panel / / External connection zone for a personal computer, where all the peripherals can be connected.
Unit 3
Form Factor / / Specification of a motherboard including physical dimensions, power supply type and other details.
ATX motherboard / / The form factor from which most of the form factors used in personal desktop computers have evolved.
Computer Case / / It has the function of protecting the computer components.
Desktop Computer / / Used for work and for entertaining, both at home and at the workplace.
Laptop Computer / / They can be used in a mobility environment, and have evolved to offer the same features as desktop computers.
Tablet / / Portable touch-enabled devices to use on the move. They offer computer-like functionalities..
Mobile Communication Devices / / They allow you to make phone calls and have evolved to offer computer-like functionalities.
Unit 4
manual / / Gives extended information on features and configuration about the motherboard or any other electronic device.
Computer BIOS / / Takes care of detecting and testing all the components connected to the computer.
manufacturer / / The manufacturers play an important role in the computer worlds, as they lead research and innovation in this field.
jumpers / / In computing a jumper is a short length of conductor used to close a break in to set up or configure printed circuit boards, such as the motherboards of computers.
