Current Events

Being aware of what is happening in your community and the world around you is very important. In order to encourage you to read the newspaper on a regular basis and to become a more informed student, throughout the year you will be choosing news articles that interest you and writing summaries on them. You may read a variety of newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times (any edition), the The Evening Outlook, or the New York Times. You may also find articles online, so long as you can print them out for me. The article you pick can be a local news story, something happening in another country, business news, etc. You may not choose movie or event reviews, horoscopes, comics, etc. It must be a news article and should be at least three paragraphs in length. You are only allowed two sports articles for the year.

One current event article will be due every other Wednesday. Each current event article is worth 10 points, and you will receive 3 bonus points if your article relates to something we have studied or will be studying in class. You must turn in a copy of the article stapled neatly to the back of your written work. Your written work should be typed or written neatly in blue or black ink. As usual, neatness and spelling count.

In the first paragraph you need to include:

1)  the title of the article, the name of the newspaper, the section in which

you found it (Front Page, Business, World, etc.) and the date in which

the article appeared in the paper. If it was online, no section needed.

2)  a 5 to 8 sentence summary of what the article was about.

In the second paragraph you need to discuss:

1)  the significance of the article. Why is it important? Why did you choose it?

2)  your opinion or reaction to the article. How does it make you feel?

3)  a conclusion. What do you think or hope will happen?
