In Reading:In reading, we will be reviewing our two (l and r blends)and three letter blends (scr, str, squ). We will also be looking that students are applying these two and three letter blends to their everyday writing. We will also continue to review “oi/oy” and “Bossy r” (er, ir, or, ar). This week, we will review all Comprehension and Fluency reading strategies to help us understand and read smoothly, with expression! To help with reading comprehension, please find a story for your child to read (two times for fluency and understanding!) and answer multiple choice questions based on the text. Remind your child when reading, to use their reading strategies when they come to a word they don’t know!
In writing:This week we will continue to work on fiction stories. However, instead of the whole class writing about one topic, students will pick their own fiction topic to write about. Ask your child what they wrote as an introduction to pull their reader in (their hook)? A good introduction should ask a question. Students still will also continue to focus on neat printing, putting spaces between words, using the word wall, using upper case letters andstop marks / periods properly.
In Math:We will soon begin our unit: “Addition and Subtraction to 20”. If you are looking for things to work on at home with your child mental math is a great focus. Our mental math strategy “Adding with 10” has been introduced (2+10, 10+6, 1+10). When adding at home, please remind your child to always put the bigger number in your head and “count on” the smaller number. When we add 10, we think about a group of 10 and then some more. We put 10 in our heads and “count on”. For a challenge, try “Adding 10s” (For: 24+30, think 24 plus 3 tens...24...34, 44, 54. So, 24+30=54).
