Fo Guang University Buddhist Studies Scholarship Regulations

  1. In order to foster individual talents who are versed in Buddhist studies, to propagate Buddhism, to purify society, and to encourage students to study with the Department of Buddhist Studies, the University has established the Fo Guang University Buddhist Studies Scholarship Regulations (hereafter referred to as Regulations).
  2. Students who are accepted to the University and are enrolled in the Department of Buddhist Studies are eligible to apply for an academic scholarship of NT $50,000 each semester.
  3. Recipients of the Scholarship are required to reside in the Department of Buddhist Studies dormitory as well as follow all Departmental stipulated practice requirements for the entire duration of their studies.
  4. Recipients of the Scholarship may continue receiving the scholarship in subsequent semesters. Students who transfer to other departments will no longer be eligible to continue receiving the Scholarship; such students will also be required to return all previously received scholarship money.
  5. Should Scholarship recipients commit the following listed violations, then dependent on the situation and following review by the Department of Buddhist Studies, the Scholarship amount for the next semester might be either reduced or taken away completely. Those who commit serious violations may have their right to apply for the Scholarship permanently revoked.
1)Students who fail two courses will have their scholarship amount reduced by one fourth; students who fail three courses will have their scholarship amount reduced by half.
2)According to the Fo Guang University Student Awards and Punishments Regulations, students who are warned by the University for violations will have their Scholarship amount reduced by one fourth; students who commit minor violations will have their Scholarship amount reduced by half; and students who commit major violations will have their right to apply for the Scholarship permanently revoked.
3)Students who are absent from one sixth of their classes during the semester will have their Scholarship amount reduced by half. Those who are absent from one third of their classes during the semester will have their right to apply for the Scholarship permanently revoked.
4)Students who are found to be smoking cigarettes or eating betel nuts whether on or off campus during their period of academic enrollment will have their Scholarship amount reduced by half after the first time they are discovered, and will have their right to apply for the Scholarship permanently revoked after the second time they are discovered.
5)Students who are discovered drinking alcohol whether on or off campus during their period of academic enrollment will have their right to apply for the Scholarship forever revoked.
  1. Recipients of the Scholarship are not allowed to apply for or receive other University scholarships (Work-Study Award, Academic Excellence Award, and government-granted scholarships are not included within this restriction.)
  2. Recipients of the Scholarship are allowed to apply for and receive the Scholarship for a maximum of four academic years for undergraduate study and two academic years for Master’s and Doctoral study. Students may not continue receiving the Scholarship after graduation.Students who defer study, withdraw, or take leave of absence may not continue receiving the Scholarship. Students who defer study, withdraw, or take leave of absence are required to return all Scholarship money that they received previously. Students who enroll again after deference, withdrawal, or leave of absence can apply to have all Scholarship money that they returned to the University returned to them. Those with serious medical conditions or other unforeseen circumstances are subject to decision by meeting of the Administration.
  3. Students applying for the Scholarship must submit an application along with an official copy of their transcript from the previous semester to the Department of Buddhist Studies within 15 days of the beginning of each academic semester.
  4. Depending on the needs of the Department of Buddhist Studies or the University, recipients of the Scholarship are expected to volunteer their services to the Department or University each academic year.
  5. Recipients of the Scholarship who are found guilty of forgery or dishonesty will have their rights to the Scholarship money revoked; those who have already received the Scholarship money must return the received amount in full, and will be subject to University regulations.
