A proper Health History is a medical-legal requirement in dental practice. What questions need to be asked? Is an interview required? The proper elements of a health history will be reviewed with a sample history and interview sheet provided. We all manage patients on medications or those with heart, kidney or psychiatric problems. Some patients have infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis or hepatitis. All these patients, and many more, require proper management for safe dental treatment. Dental protocols for patients with common medical problems, will be discussed including correct prophylactic antibiotic use for hearts and prosthetic joints, diabetes, bleeding problems, immunosupression and other diseases. The protocols outlined in this course are Internet based, are constantly updated and are always available to the practitioner.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.You will learn the major medical problems that require altering dental management to minimize any possible medical complications.

2.You will learn how the drugs used in dentistry can impact a patients medical condition or interact with drugs they may be taking.

3.You will learn the standard cut-off criteria between normal and abnormal for high blood pressure, diabetes, blood dyscrasias and other systemic diseases with oral manifestations.

4.You will learn the most current (1997) guidelines for heart and total joint prophylaxis.

5.You will learn the standard management techniques for heart disease patients as well as patients taking anticoagulants, thyroid supplements, and other medications for systemic diseases.

  1. You will learn about the few dental drugs that have the greatest chance of causing drug interactions with medication used to treat systemic diseases.

A Handout will be available (or internet accessable) which will include an English language dental health history, which is also translated into 40 different languages. The handout will also include a Dental Management Protocols manual addressing the management considerations for the medical problems that comprise over 90% of the medical considerations impacting dentistry.
