In lieu of a test on The Odyssey, please choose ONE of the following creative projects that will demonstrate your expertise of this epic poem. You will be graded on creativity, accuracy to the text, neatness, and thoroughness.
Board Game – Design and build your own board game that goes along with the plot progression and major themes apparent in The Odyssey. Suggestions: Have the squares represent different parts/events from the novel. Also, have each player answer questions about the novel to advance around the game board. You might also consider having the playing pieces to represent different characters from the epic.
Container Book Report – Choose a container —a paper bag, a coffee can with a cover, a box, etc. Decorate the container with details appropriate to The Odyssey. On the inside of the container, enclose five physical items that symbolize The Odyssey in some way. Then, you must type up a one-page, single-spaced document (Times New Roman, size 12) that explains the significance of each physical item to the text as a whole.
Odysseus’s Scrapbook–Imagine that as Odysseus is traveling, he takes time to document all of his experiences with the natives, monsters, and goddesses from other lands. Create a scrapbook that includes a minimum of six journal entries (1/2-typed page, single spaced) and six pictures/illustrations. You can get creative and fancy, but makes sure the details of the scrapbook and the contents of his journal entries follow a chronological progression of the story.
Children’s Book- Think about the possible themes of The Odyssey. These could include things like perseverance during difficult times, faithfulness to the ones you love, or pride of your homeland. Create a children’s version of The Odyssey that communicates an important lesson from this epic poem to a small child.Your book should summarize Odysseus’s entire journey (in terms that are appropriate for children) and end with the theme or moral. It should be neat, creative, and colorful; at least 8 pages long; bound in some way that resembles a real children’s book; and free from spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
Travel Brochure- Create a tri-fold travel brochure that promotes the travel path that Odysseus took in The Odyssey. You should include a minimum of three stops Odysseus made on his journey. The front panel should be eye-catching and contain a clever title about the locations you have chosen. The inside pages should include a paragraph about each destination (in glowing terms). Other things you can include: Landmarks and Features, Outdoor Activities, Nightlife, Where to Stay, Testimonials, etc. You may create this by hand, but it must be neat and readable. There must be content on every page.
