For the story “Everyday Use” the theme is don’t try to be something your not. This theme is being used by mama. In the quote I have mama is talking about how she wishes she was the opposite of what she is. “I am the way my daughter would want to be: A hundred pounds lighter, my skin like an uncooked barley pancake. My hair glistens in the hot bright lights. (104)” Mama wants to be like Dee because she is the opposite of her, but she is just like Maggie. Also in this next quote Mama is talking about how Dee is not afraid to be her self and Mama wishes she was like that. “It seems to me I have talked to them always with one foot raised in flight, with my head fumed in whichever way is farthest from them. Dee, though. She would always look anyone in the eye. Hesitation was no part of her nature.(104)” Mama would love to be the way Dee is but she knows that she isn’t and she never will because she wouldn’t say what’s on her mind. So in conclusion Mama would rather be like her rich wealthy daughter because Dee is what she is what she always wanted to be but, never will be like. She is starting to realize by the end of the story that she is way more like Maggie her second Daughter. When she does she accepts it and no long favors the Daughter she wants to be like. Mama starts to treat them at equals.
