Purchasing Manhattan Island
  • In 1626, Peter Minuit purchased the island of Manhattan from the local Native Am. for trade goods.
Dutch Influence & its Diverse Population in North America
  • Established colony in modern day New York & New Jersey. The Dutch called it New Netherland with it capital being called New Amsterdam and settled the Hudson River Valley.
  • Their economy was based upon fur trade with the local Native Americans.
  • There were settlers from Sweden, France, & Portugal., but one of the colony's main problems was its small Dutch population.
Patroon System
  • In the late 1620s, large estates were offered to patroonwho would bring new settlers to the colony in return they would work to pay off their debt to him.

A Buffer for the Colonies
  • England was looking for a way to protect its Carolina colonies from the Spanish. Georgia was established to be a buffer between England's colonies & the Spanish colony.
Protection for Debtors
  • What is a debtor? A person who owes money.
  • Englishlaws required that debtors be jailed if they couldn't pay their debts. Georgia would be used as a colony where debtors could reform.

Founder and Leader of GA Colony
  • James Oglethorpe & a group of investors wanted a colony for debtors where they could be reformed. Oglethorpe served as governor for 20 years.
No Slaves Allowed
  • Georgia's founders wanted it be a colony of small farms...not on plantations, however, settlers weren’t in favor of this idea.
  • Slavery was originally banned in the colony and remained this way until 1751.
