Who are we?

Our community driven initiative, the Impumelelo Educational Trust is a non – profitmaking legal entity registered with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Developments’ Master of the High Court in Pretoria under IT 4780/12, from Simile Township, Sabie.

Sabie is a small town located in Mpumalanga province just 45 km from Nelspruit and 350km from Gauteng province in South Africa. The town has a very small economy and is characterised by high poverty and unemployment levels. Majority of the population rely on State social grants for living and enrolment of learners in Tertiary Education institutions remains a big societal challenge.

What does Impumelelo mean?

Impumelelo is a Nguni (IsiZulu, SiSwati,SiNdebele and IsiXhosa languages) word which means success in the English language.

When did we form our trust?

Our trust was registered in 2012 with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and formally launched in 2013 at Ekuthuleni Hall in Simile,Sabie and was given its blessings by the MEC for Mpumalanga Department of Education , Ms ReginahMhaule who was the main speaker on the day of the launch.

Why did we form our trust?

Our trust was formulated to assist our community to address educational challenges. Some of the key peculiar reasons that our community is still facing and have a big impact on the future of our youth are the following:

•Highly expensive tertiary education system in the country

•Majority of learners cannot afford tertiary educations fees

•Increase in the number of high school learner drop outs

•Youth crime and high teenage pregnancy

•Less educated youth population

•Lack of utilisation of skills and experience accumulated by community tertiary and employed graduates

What is our Vision?

Our vision is to create the fountain of hope, inspiration and success for the dreams of theSabie youth and community.

We aim to provide a one stop solution for educational challenges and promote education as a key priority in life.

What is our aim and objectives?

Our main objective is to provide financial assistance to learners from less affording and poor backgrounds that pass their Matric with Bachelors to further their Tertiary education studies in South Africa.Not only do we concern ourselves with financial assistance to needy learners, but we also intend to resolve all educational challenges that engulf our community. Other objectives of our trust are as follows:

  • Promote schooling and education in Sabie through various initiatives and programmes;
  • Provide information and knowledge on career paths and education;
  • Create a network for dialogue amongst the youth and community at large;
  • Provide mentorship programmes for the youth;
  • Facilitate job opportunities after completion of tertiary education;

Do we have beneficiaries so far?

In spite of the minimal donations and contributions we have received thus far, Our Trust is currently partially funding two learners from Sabie since the commencement of the 2014 Academic year. The learners are studying in the fields of Geology and Electrical Engineering in the University of Limpopo and Tshwane University of Technology respectively.As a Trust we further provide moral and mentoring support to our learners on an ongoing basis. We hope that our enrolment numbers would increase in the coming years and such would be dependent on our funding streams.

How much can we contribute?

Any amount of contribution is welcomed by the trust and can range from 100rands to any high amount per month. We encourage everyone to make their contributions into our bank account by stop order or internet transfer.

How do I qualify to get financial assistance from the Impumelelo Educational Trust?

  • High school learners who attained an exemption and /or university entrance status
  • High school learners frompoor, less-affording background and previously disadvantaged community.
  • The Trust financial aid covers studies towards a junior Degree or Diploma in a technical, college, university of technology and university; however, it does not cover postgraduate studies.
  • Full-time, part time and correspondence courses of study are recognized by the Trust.

What does the financial assistance cover?

  • Registration (to be covered by Parent/Guardian)
  • Tuition
  • Examinations (excluding supplementary exams)
  • Bridging courses
  • Textbooks
  • On-campus accommodation (including meals)

How does our Trust operate daily?

Office Administration

Our trust aims to have a fully-fledged operational office as soon as possible. Due to lack of funding and resources the trust currently operates on a part time basis.The makeshift office is located in Simile Township at one of our unemployed volunteers home.This office is managed by some of our unemployed youth in collaboration with the trustees and some volunteers.We would appreciate if the business sector or any good volunteer to offer us some opportunity to establish our office on a full time basis.

Our trust has further developed the following committees to execute some of its functions:

Finance

The focus of this committee is to exercise oversight on the financials of the Trust and prepare financial statements. This committee is chaired by the Treasurer. The deputy Treasurer deputises for the Treasurer during his/her absence.

Events management

The focus of this committee is to manage all events that the Trust will host. This includes career expos, awards, general meetings, annual general meetings (AGMS), student development and fund raising events. .

Learner and Student development

The main of focus of this committee is to execute the following areas of intervention:

  • Mentorship
  • Career Guidance
  • Student Motivation
  • Networking of students
  • Bridging the gap between tertiary life style and the corporate world
  • Work-integrated learning / Experiential Learning (Where possible)

Fundraising

The focus of this committee is to initiate and sustain fundraising campaigns and activities for the trust. This entails building relationships as well as establishing strategic and mutually beneficial relationships. The career paths of the students accepted as beneficiaries from the Trust means that opportunities for collaboration are vast.

Marketing and Communications

Communication forms the bloodline of the Trust. In addition to communicating with current and future learners, the Core Team intends to reconnect with all ex learners of Sabie High Schools as well as current and future partnerships.As part of communication, the committee is responsible for:

  • The website development , up-keeping and maintenance
  • Newsletters, e-newsletters and all publications
  • Database maintenance and updating
  • Social media

Since the Trust aims mainly to communicate with; current and future learners, ex Sabie high school learners, ex Sabie residents, current and future strategic partners and the community at large – a wide variety of communication media will be used. These will range from the more traditional newsletters to more interactive and techno media such as blogging, social networks and live chat.

Our trust requests anyone from our community and anywhere in our country to volunteer their time and services.We currently do not have full-time human resources capacity. Matric Awards 2014

The Impumelelo Educational Trust hosted its inaugural Matric Awards for the Class of 20313 at Ekuthuleni Hall in Simile,Sabie.The purpose of the awards was to honour the learners, and teachers for the excellent work they achieved in 2013 at Memezile High School. Memezile High School had a significant improvement on their results from having obtained 48 percent in 2012 to achieving 72 percent in 2013 with limited resources.

The attendees of the awards ceremony was made up of community members, councillors, learners, Memezile and Skhila High Schools,political parties and community organisations.The ceremony further served as an opportunity for the intensification of the introduction of the Impumelelo Educational Trust to the community of Sabie since its formation in 2012.Certificates,medals and trophies were awarded to all the winners.

The Best Teacher Award for 2013 went to Ms M R Maponya and Best Learner Award was awarded to Ms ThokozileMthombothi all from Memezile High School. Learners who obtained a Bachelors’ certificate for Matric were also given awards and certificates and they were: Appearance Monareng,PortiaMabilu, Musa Kowana,SakhileMundzhedzi,NandiMalatjie, Brian Mabuza,SharonMkhabela,MmaletagoMokoena,MpumeleloMthimkhulu and Elton Hlatshwayo.

Lonecreek and Floreat hotels contributed to the success of our event by pledging free accommodation vouchers for our best educator,principal and educators that achievedhundrend percent in their learning areas.

Career Expo 2014

Our trust hosted its 2nd Career Expo of 2014 at Memezile High School in Sabie, Mpumalanga on 25 April 2014 from 1100 to 1400.The purpose of the Career Expo was to provide guidance and exposure to the various career paths which learners might want to pursue after completing their respective Matric

The event took place within the premises of the school.The organisations and tertiary institutions that participated were:

  • Department of Transport
  • Komatiland Forests
  • Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust
  • University of Mpumalanga
  • Tshwane University of Technology

All the representatives of the aforementioned organisation were given an opportunity to present the respective career fields and opportunities. Learners were also provided with an opportunity to ask questions and the responses were provided by the presenters. Several pamphlets and career guides were given to learners.

Mandela Day 2014

The Impumelelo Educational Trust joined the whole world in the celebration of Mandela Day 2014 on 18 July 2014.The event was held in Simile,Sabie. The focus of event was to bring services and intervention to all the Simile crèches.

The crèches were Tlangelani, Ekuzameni, Siyanakekela and Ekucathuleni.ThabaChweu Local Economic Development Agency (Thaleda) was the main partner to the trust and really provided some great interventions. Some of the activities that took place during Mandela Day involved cleaning, playing with children and giving of items such as heaters, cakes, cutlery, blankets and dishes.The Simile hawkers trading area was also revamped and thanks to Thaleda for donating the building material.

Who is in our Board of Trustees?

Sipho Moses Dibakwane, Founder of Trust, is currently employed by the National Department of Transport as a Transport Policy Analyst in the Office of the Director General in Pretoria. He is a member of the Black Management Forum, Progressive Professionals Forum and Institute of International Affairs in Johannesburg.

Sipho, holds a Masters of Management in Public Policy obtained from the University of Witwatersrand. Other academic qualifications include, Advanced Management Development programme with Public Administration and Learning Academy (PALAMA), the Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Development Administration obtained with University of Witwatersrand, and Bachelors of Arts (BA) Honours inPolitical Science and English from the University of Venda. Prior to his tertiary education, Sipho matriculated from Memezile high school and attained his primary education in Lindani primary school in Simile, Sabie.

Bonginkosi Victor Mbungela, is an admitted and practising attorney of the High Court of South Africa, holds aBaccalaureus Procurationis(B.Proc) degree obtained from the University of Venda. His practising firm, NyalunguMbungela Attorneys is based in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga province. Prior to his tertiary education, Bonginkosi, matriculated from Memezile high school and attained his primary education in Lindani primary school in Sabie.Apart from being a practising attorney, Bonginkosi is an accredited Military Law Practitioner attached to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Polokwane Legsato where he holds a rank of Major. He is also a part-time lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology, a Board Member of the SiluluSesiSwati Lexicography Unit.Bonginkosi is also a sworn acting Magistrate for the district of Nsikazi and a Commissioner in the Small Claims Court for the district of Pilgrims’ Rest.

Hanniekie Ethel Mdhluli is an Educator by profession and teaches at Lehlasedi High School in Shatale, Bushbukridge and is also an acting Head of Department. Hanniekie holds a Secondary Teachers Diploma with Mapulaneng College of Education, Diploma in Human Resources Management with the Business Management Training College of South Africa, an Advanced Certificate in Education with the University of South Africa (UNISA).She is a member of the South African Council for Educators (SACE). Prior to her tertiary education, Hanniekie, matriculated from Memezile High School and attained her primary education in Lindani primary school in Simile, Sabie.

Hanniekie has a passion for education development and is currently studying towards a Bachelor’s Degree (Bed) in Inclusive Education with the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Sibusiso Sylvester Lekhuleniis currently employed as a Senior Internal Auditor for AVENG, who are the leaders in infrastructure development in South Africa. Sibusiso holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Commerce (B Comm) Honours degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal and a B Commdegree in Accounting from the University of the Witwatersrand. Prior to his tertiary education, Sibusiso, matriculated from Mathews Phosa College in Nelspruit and attained his primary education in Lindani primary school in Sabie. Sibusiso, is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and is currently studying to be a Certified Internal Auditor.

Long Live Our Founding Trustee

One of our founding Trustees, Mr TshwareloPenwellMashego, sadly passed on in the beginning of 2014. Tswarelo was quite pivotal and instrumental in the formation of our Trust and its operation.Tswarelo’s last employment was as a Plantation Manager for Komatiland Forest in Bergvliet, Sabie. He held aBachelor’s Degree of Technology in Forestry with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Other academic qualifications include, the National Diploma in Forestry with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the Management Development Programme with the University of Pretoria. Prior to his tertiary education, Tshwarelo, matriculated from Memezile high school and attained his primary education in Lindani primary school in Simile, Sabie. We will always keep his spirit alive Tswarelo and May his soul rest in peace.
