Family background:X comes from a middle class xxxx joint family. He resides with his paternal grandmother, his parents, and an elder sister. His father has done his yyyyand is currently holding a job in a reputed company. X’s mother is a aaa graduate and is employed as xxxx. His sister is currently doing her first year of ggg.

Medical history: X’s birth records were normal, his gross and fine motor developmental milestones were delayed which indicated a concern. At the age of 2, the chief complaints parents had were limited understanding, lack of communication and poor socializing. Through a medical website the parents came across information and obtained a tentative diagnosis. They sought the required treatment and he received intensive therapy for attention, socializing, speech, motor movement – occupational and physiotherapy and individualized remedial assistance from hhhh institute for the children diagnosed with Autism.

Previous educational history:

X’s parent approached bbbbSchoolin December 2001for his admission to the kindergarten as the professionals working with him understood that he was ready for integration in a normal setup.

Observation and status at the time of admission:During admission observation it was noted that he interacted in English, he did not give consistent and direct eye contact. He enjoyed reading. He showed clear traits of hyperlexia with amazing photographic memory. He showed fascination towards vehicles and screamed and ran suddenly especially when parents interacted with the professionals for more than 3-5 minutes.

He was provided admission in the junior KG on provisional basis, as this would assist to know if integration was going to be of assistance or hindrance to his learning. He was initially called for an hour on alternate days and slowly the time and the number dayshe attended school were increased.

Through intensive observation, assistance was provided to him to adjust to the new system and teachers were provided assistance to work with him.

Progress and learning noted and recorded by the school mental health professionals:

Kindergarten:attendance on part time basis initially which was gradually increased

Academics:

He worked only when the teacher gave him individual attention.

He disliked writing and the teacher had to hold his hand and help him to write / draw / do craft tasks.

Behaviour /Social skills:

Poor or no eye contact.

He would suddenly run around the class screaming or making repetitive sounds.

He would go under the table or begin jumping on it

He was easily distracted by the traffic sounds and would climb the window to look out

He would snatch others belongings

He showed fascination towards long hair and would pullthe pigtails of girls in his class

He did not understand the feelings / emotions of others and would show fascination towards tears trickling down others cheeks.

He enjoyed pushing others which in turn caused physical injury

Primary stage-: Regular school attendance

Academics:

He disliked all the art periods as the gum would mess his hands and his fine motor skills were low.

His dance teacher reported concern andfelt he had motor concerns as his movements were awkward

Had to write in sheets where his work was incomplete

Written expressive language was a challenge in terms of ideation, sentence structure, and handwriting

Behaviour/ Social Skills :

He had difficulty in getting acquainted with all the teachers entering the class for the different subjects

Participation in annual events or access days caused a lot of anxiety in him

In the music sessions as well in oral work, his performance was inconsistent as he showed obvious discomfort

He showed challenge to comprehend the humour in jokes

He had difficulty in being able to have a regular conversation with his peers

Interactingand making and maintaining friends was an area that required to be worked on

He was not able to statehis thoughts and feelings

Secondary Section/ Current performance:

Academics:

He scored##% in the semester exams and a ##% in his cycle test III.

He has good ideas and shows creativity in language and mathematical abilities but when topics are made concrete, he comprehends better.

In the oral work (for languages) he is soft spoken and avoids eye contact with everyone – gives eye contact only to a few friends around.

Though he is good at computers, he cannot relate to the programming part as it is abstract.

Behaviour / Social Skills

In the 7th grade he has peers he calls friends and he plays, provided they initiate the game and include him in it.

He still has difficulty in taking help and stating his needs

He had difficulty in adjusting to the change in timings (from afternoon to morning school)

Coping with the changes on a daily basis like change in seat, no teacher in class at times, annual event preparation in a differently structured environment was something he had to be prepared for

He faced difficulty in understanding and handling teasing as well as bullying

He showed concerns in coping, being aware of and understanding growing up changes

He goes through exam anxiety and small things disturb him. For e.g. if a girl is sitting besides him during exams or there is a sudden change in place.

He has begun travelling independently.

Challenges faced in:

Recommendations:

In accordance to the observations mentioned above,X has shown good adjustment with parental support and assistance. He is currently scoring well in his academics and is managing well.

Currently parent support is provided to help X as he does not like to seek help from the Resource department due to the views and beliefs that he has heard few students have.

This support will be continued and indirect assistance provided. Counsellor’s suggestions and recommendations will continue to be sought for assisting him in facing the challenges and dealing with them.

Obtaining the diagnostic certification from Nair hospital would help the school plan and make the changes to help him perform in a more comfortable environment.

Provisions that would benefit

X shows difficulty in his social skills and in expressing his feelings and needs and in language.

Obtaining a certificate from NairHospital would certainly benefit him and the following provisions could be considered and the ones needed would be implemented for the board exams:

Extra time, Dropping of a language, Own school as centre, Planned seating arrangement, Assistance to be given for science practical.

To granthim theprovisions henceforth if required, to reduce the stress; this would help him adjust to the provisions.
