Importing Data Into TMG From Other Genealogical Software Programs, UFT and FTM Examples:
I. The Simple Method--Allowing TMG’s GenBridge to make all decisions.
A. File, Import, Simple Wizard, Next
B. Highlight Ultimate Family Tree Backup(*.Sqz) [or Family Tree Maker(*.FTW)]
C. Locate, E:/Kennedy.sqz [or C:/.../Demo.FTW]
D. Name the project and check location, Next,
E. Finish.
II. Completing and Checking after any Import:
A. Would you like to review the listing file now--Yes, No? This file reports any problems\comments associated with the import.
B. Open list file in Word and print this list while import completes.
1. Did data go where you want?
2. If you answered questions, would you have made the same answers based on what you did in your dataset?
C. Would you like the file to be Locked or Unlocked?
D. Examine the new file for errors.
1. Start with the Master Lists under Tools—places.
2. Spot check events for different persons.
3. Try out a narrative report or 2.
E. You may make many imports, just change the filenames. [or Delete]
III. The Advanced Method—FTM example--Making decisions yourself:
A. FTM import asks fewer questions than UFT.
B. Initial steps the same, but click “advanced”.
C. Tag type choices:
1. Some done automatically for you; check that these are ok.
2. Highlight an unassigned tag type on left;
3. Check the tag type group at bottom; if need to change this group, click properties and choose a new group.
4. Highlight the type you want to put it into on the right (it automatically changes its tag type group at bottom)
5. Click assign. If you make a mistake, click unassign; try again.
6. Problem??
- Unassigned FTM Tag Types don’t seem to come into TMG as they are supposed to,
- You’ll want to assign them if you’ve used them in FTM.
D. Comment/Location Destination:
1. Double Click to change setting.
2. Toggle 4 positions: (1) Location (2) Comment
(3) Location. Comment (4) Location; Comment
E. Next, Finish, “you may want to audit the Master Place List”.
IV. The Advanced Method—UFT example:
A. Initial steps the same, but choose advanced.
B. Date & place choices--How did YOU enter dates & places in UFT?
1. As Structured Date or as Freeform Date and if Freeform, as day mo year or mo day year.
2. Are your places: short, long, just place, or whichever is longest?
3. Which place fields will you import into TMG’s place abbreviations—none, short, long, or just place.
C. Name choices--How did YOU enter research and event notes in UFT? Where do you want them in TMG?
1. Name Research notes—Note tag, primary name tag memo, or research task.
2. Event research notes—Memo to event or research task.
D. Event types--Will you import all UFT’s types or only those you used?
E. Other choices:
1. Merge identical freenotes (sources).
2. Merge repositories with same name and different locations.
3. Import empty birth events (not required in TMG).
4. Import event/role templates & add memo to end of every template.
5. Import source categories, components, and templates.
6. Convert CR (carriage return) + space to CR+CR+Tab.
7. Reuse place detail settings from last import.
F. Tag type choices:
1. Assign tag types as in FTM import.
2. But, unassigned UFT tag types will come into TMG as unique new tag types, so you don’t have to assign them all.
3. To leave unassigned, do not highlight on either side.
G. Detail Fields from UFT. For each tag type, decide where the 2 details fields from UFT should go.
1. Double click on field to change.
2. Toggles 2 positions: (1) Place Detail or (2) Event Memo.
H. Click Finish or go back and make adjustments.
