Math 72–Mon & WED CLASSES ONLY

Spring Quarter 2007

IMPORTANT ! See backside for notes about topics and tests.

Test Topics, Sections Covered & Special Notes

TEST 11.1, 1.2, & 1.3 (Real Numbers)

TEST 22.1, 2.2, 2.3 & 2.4 (Linear Equations and Inequalities)

Sec 2.1 You need to know the following terms and their definitions: coefficient, constant term, term, and degree. Degree refers to the largest exponent on the variable if the expression is only in one variable. For example, 3x5+ 2x3– 6x +8 has a degree of 5.

Sec 2.3 You do not need to worry about the age word problems in this section.

TEST 33.1, 4.1 & 4.2 (Graphing Linear Equations)

Ask your instructor for graph paper for these sections.

Sec 3.1 You DO NOT need to know the material concerning the area of a circle.

Sec 4.2 You do NOT need to know all of the different forms for writing the equation of a line. I recommend using y = mx + b form (slope-intercept) for now, and practice it exclusively until it "clicks", then try one or both of the other forms. Test #3 actually only covers Concept #1 for linear equations. Concept #2 will be covered on Test #4, but it might be a good idea to study both now.

TEST 44.2, 4.3 & 5.1 (Graphing Inequalities & Linear Systems of Equations)

Ask your instructor for graph paper for these sections.
Sec 4.2 Again, you will note that section 4.2 is repeated here. Test #4 will cover Concept #2.

TEST 56.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.1, 7.2, & 7.3 (Exponents, Polynomials, & Factors)

Sec 6.1 – 6.3 are mostly review because they are also covered in MATH 70. Most students find this review helpful, but iIf you feel that you are already familiar with this material, you can skip these sections, including the evaluates and the homework. If you choose to do the evaluates, the grades will be part of your average evaluate score. For Sec 6.3 you are NOT required to know how to do the long division of polynomials.

Sec 7.3 You do not need to know how to factor either the sum or the difference of cubes. Also, You do not need to memorize all the different patterns of factoring. You just need to know how to factor each type of polynomial.

NOTE: After Test #5, you must also do Sections 8.1 & 8.2. In Section 8.2 however, you ONLY have to do the part on scientific notation. You are NOT responsible for the section covering addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators. Your instructor will credit your evaluate for any problems that include this topic.

FINAL TESTincludes all the material above AND sections 8.18.2.
