REQUESTING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

DIRECTIONS TO THE STUDENT

Teachers who write letters of recommendation spend a great deal of time and effort preparing these letters for you. Letters of recommendation play a significant role in college admissions, particularly among small and mid-size colleges.

The more information you provide to the letter writer, the better s/he will be able to prepare an accurate, interesting and impressive portrayal of you. Therefore, it is in your best interest to carefully follow the directions outlined below:

1.Teachers receive numerous requests for letters of recommendation. It is important to allow the writer ample time to prepare the letter.Request letters of recommendation prior to the end of the junior year.

2.Colleges usually require two letters of recommendation from teachers. Before making this decision about which teacher/s to ask, consult with your guidance counselor. Then ask the teacher/s if they would be willing to write a letter on your behalf.

3.When you ask the teacher you have selected to write a letter of recommendation for you, beaware that the teacher may refuse your request for any number of valid reasons. S/he may not know you well enough to write a recommendation. The teacher may have received so many requests for recommendations that s/he is unable to accept any additional requests.

4.Once the teacher has agreed to write a letter of recommendation for you, complete the attached form entitled “Request for Recommendation”. Prepare a resumeand attach it to this form. If possible, attach a sample of the work you did in the teacher’s class. Select something sensational!

.

SOME FINAL REMINDERS:

Be thorough and neat in preparing materials for the letter writer.

Be considerate of his/her time; ask sooner rather than later.

Keep the letter writer informed about the admissions decisions you receive from colleges.

When you make a final decision about which college you will attend, share it with those people who helped you get in, the letter writers!

Send a written thank you note to the writer!
