Facilitator Guide
Implementing the New Mathematics K to 7 IRP:
April 5, 2007
Pre-Webcast
1. BEFORE the conference call, download, copy and organize “Facilitator Material for Download” resources from:
http://www.insinc.com/ministryofeducation/20070405/facilitator.html
Facilitator Materials
· Facilitator Guide (this document)
· Facilitators’ Feedback Form
· Participant Documents
Participant (and Facilitator) Handouts
· Agenda
· Presentation Slides—printed in handout style with three slides to a page and room for notes
· Grade level specific IRP – one grade for each participant or participants can share in groups of two or three
2. Register and participate in one of two conference calls:
· Tuesday, April 3rd at 10am or 1pm
· Please have the Facilitator Materials and Participant Handouts with you for the conference call.
3. Facility Check: Ensure adequate seating and refreshments
4. Each participant will need a copy of the Participant Handouts and paper/stickies for questions. Blank paper should be provided at each table so ideas and discussions can be recorded.
5. Participants should be seated by grade groupings (e.g. Early primary, late primary, intermediate, etc.).
On the day
8:30 Welcome and coffee at your site
8:45 Technical check in
· Be sure that your tech people are there to confirm that everything is working
8:50 Your site overview
· Set the context with the participants
· Ensure each participant has the Participant Handout package.
· Throughout the webcast, the presenters will address questions from sites. Participants should write their questions on the paper provided and take them to the person designated to email the host site using Question Manager, which your tech person is familiar with.
9:00 Opening— Richard DeMerchant, Facilitator
Welcome & Purpose & Agenda
Richard will go over the morning’s agenda and introduce co-presenters John Pusic, Linda Jensen from Langley, Rosamar Garcia from Richmond, and Anne Boyd from Campbell River.
· Slide of the Agenda will be displayed and a copy of the Agenda is included in the Participant Handouts.
9:05 Review of Questions that resulted from March 8th webcast—Richard DeMerchant, Ministry of Education – 10 mins
Richard will address a selection of the questions that were posed at the conclusion of the March 8th webcast focused on the content of the new Mathematics K-7 IRP.
9:15 The Processes of Mathematics (Slide 6) – 5 Mins
Richard will introduce John Pusic who will introduce the Estimation versus Calculation video designed to introduce the discussion on the Mathematics Processes.
9:20 Debrief of Video and Introduction to Processes – 10 mins
· Discussion of video followed by John defining the seven mathematical processes using slides 7 – 9.
9:30 Think•Pair•Share Activity – 15 Min (optional activity)
· Participants will be asked to reflect on their own practice and come up with examples of how they address some of the 7 processes.
· Slide 8 will be shown while this activity takes place.
9:45 Video Activity – Watch & Discuss – 5 min (discussion)
· Participants will observe the video of Jessie recounting his solution to a word problem.
· Participants will be asked to look for examples of Jessie employing the processes in his solution.
9:50 Continuation of PowerPoint
· John will connect the use of the Mathematical processes to a sample outcome in the curriculum.
10:00 Activity: Examining the IRP in terms of Processes - 15mins
Participants will be asked to examine their grade specific IRP for examples of outcomes and the suggested processes for each outcome. Partners or small groups will suggest strategies for engaging students in each of the processes while addressing the required outcomes.
10:15 Break (15 mins)
· The Facilitator could take this opportunity to ensure any additional site questions are emailed to the host site using Question Manager.
· The Facilitator could ensure that participants have a copy of the curriculum outcomes for their teaching grade level in anticipation of the activity following the break.
10:30 Table Talk – 5 mins
10:35 Continuation of the Presentation
Linda and Rosamar consider some ways of involving parents using slides 17 - 25
10:50 Table Talk – Parent Phobias (slide 26) – 10 Mins
· Slide 41 – Participants work in pairs to identify a PLO and identify the components that support it (AIs, Mathematical Processes, and Classroom Assessment Units).
· Participants will be asked to share their observations at their tables. Observations could be recorded on the paper provided.
11:00 Continuing with PowerPoint – New vs. Old Mathematics Slide 27
· Linda and Rosamar will provide resources and ideas for teachers to support parents with the shift to a new way of teaching mathematics.
11:10 —Multi Grade Classes – Anne Boyd Slide 34
11:55—Closing and Evaluation
Facilitators can use this time to discuss “next steps” for their districts.
· Participants should complete the Feedback forms which need to be collected and sent, along with the Facilitator Feedback, to the address given on the bottom of the Facilitator Feedback form.
