The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture. Since 1964, the NHPRC has awarded $175 million to 4,300 projects in all 50 states and special jurisdictions.

Publications Projects:

  • The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. – funding to publish a 14 volume series that has become the definitive record of the correspondence, sermons, speeches, published writings, and unpublished manuscripts of the famous advocate for peace and justice.
  • The Papers of Emma Goldman – funding for a project that has collected, organized, and edited tens of thousands of documents from around the world by and about the leading figure in American anarchism, feminism, and radicalism.
  • The Papers of Marcus Garvey – funding to publish 10 volumes on the champion of the back-to-Africa movementand leader of black America's centuries-long struggle for freedom, justice, and equality.

Records Projects:

  • Establish network of archives in California– support to establish or enhance archives at such institutions asStanford University, the University of California, California State University, Pomona College, the American Film Institute, San Francisco State University, Japanese American National Library, and many others.
  • State Archivessupport– funding to help modernize the state archives, improveaccess to its holdings, and prepare for emergencies.
  • Local records in California – support to help organize, preserve, manage, and make accessible county and local records throughout the state.
  • Access to the papers of diverse Americans –project and/or press support for the papers of such historical figures asMark Twain, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Samuel P. Chase, Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, John Muir, and Robert Andrews Millikan.
  • Documenting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender history – support to help preserve, organize, manage, and make accessible records related to the AIDS epidemic.
  • Electronic records preservation – research and implementation funding to solve problems of electronic records preservation and access, and to preserve the state’s geospatial data.
  • Documenting human and civil rights reform– support to preserve, process, arrange, and describe human and civil rights reform. Collections include the west coast branch of the NAACP, women political activists, and Meiklejohn civil liberties institute.
  • Ethnic records and Native-American heritage– funding to appraise, process, publicize, and make accessible records pertaining to under-documented groups including the Paiute Indians and other ethnic groups. Support includes training Native American archivists in maintaining tribal records.
  • Preserving special format collections – funding to preserve, arrange, describe, and make accessible photographs, audio recordings, slides, and other special format collections including over 3.25 million photographs at the University of California’s Bancroft Library and audio tapes of lectures by Martin Luther King, Jr., Aldous Huxley, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
  • Documenting the California experience– support to document California’s artistic, maritime, and historic experience including audio tapes from the Monterey Jazz Festival, San Francisco Maritime Museum collections, photographs of the streets of San Francisco, collections relating to the Dominguez family, and documenting Japanese American’s experiences during and after WWII.
