GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Performs difficult professional work providing a broad range of teaching services, assistingstudents to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learningin accordance with each student's ability; does related work as required. Work is performedunder the regular supervision of the school principal.This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligibleamount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring theexertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and anegligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires kneeling, reaching, standing,walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication isrequired for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is requiredto perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing andanalyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, andobserving general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outsideenvironmental conditions. Some teaching specialties (i.e. music, art, physical education, etc.)may require hearing, vision, physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of thoselisted above.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establishing a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable tolearning and personal growth; teaching a broad range of subjects.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials;
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences;
  • Integrates subject area content and technology;
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrativeregulations and procedures of the school district;
  • Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physicaleducation, music and other subjects based on approved course of study;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior;
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, preparesprogress reports; Communicates with parents through conferences and other means;
  • Identifies student needs, assists with assessment of needs;
  • Maintains professional competence through inservice education and self-selected professionalgrowth activities; Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials;
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
  • Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activitysponsorship as required; Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of elementary education principles, practices and procedures; thoroughknowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of schooldivision rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards ofbehavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff,students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited collegeor university with a degree in elementary education or an acceptable related field. Eligible for orin possession of an appropriate Virginia teaching license. Prefer endorsement to teach all grades Kindergarten through Grade 5.

SALARY RANGE:

$39,492 to $56,260

$2,100 stipend for Master's Degree
$2,600 stipend for Ed. S.
$3,100 stipend for Doctorate
