On Saturday 1st August at 8:45 pm the premièreof Gioachino Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Sivigliawill be staged, the fifth opera on the program of the 93rd edition of the Arena di Verona Opera Festival.

For 5 evenings, the Rossini opera staged by Hugo de Ana, who is responsible for its direction, set design, costumes and lighting, will transform the Roman amphitheatre into a huge garden, enhanced by the entertaining choreographies of Leda Lojodice and featuring the evocative gigantic roses which distinguish the Museo dell’Opera (AMO) at Palazzo Forti. This opera will be the Arena debut of a successful young orchestral conductor, Giacomo Sagripanti.

The cast features numerous very popular singers specialized in the Pesaro composer’s repertory:back in the role ofCount Almaviva for the first two performances (1, 7/8),Antonino Siragusa, an acclaimed Rossini performer in the world’s most important theatres, whilst for the following performances, the role will be sung by Juan José de León (20, 28/8 – 4/9), an esteemed artist on his Arena debut. For the first three evenings, the beautiful shrewd Rosina is soprano Jessica Pratt (1, 7, 20/8) and for the final performances (28/8 – 4/9) Hulkar Sabirova will be singing at the Arena for the first time. Yet another artist is debuting at the Verona amphitheatre:Mario Cassi, singing the part of the factotum Figarofor all dates. For this edition of the Festival, Bruno De Simone (1, 7, 20/8) is once again in the role of Don Bartolo, which will then be performed for the first time at the Arena by Omar Montanari (28/8 – 4/9).Roberto Tagliavini (1, 7, 20/8) and Marco Vinco (28/8 – 4/9) sing the role ofDon Basilio.Alongside the principal singers, Nicolò Ceriani will perform the roles of both Fiorello and Ambrogio, Silvia Beltrami (1, 7, 20/8) and Alice Marini (28/8 – 4/9) will alternate as Berta (the maid). Finally Victor Garcia Sierra will be an Officer. All the performers are accompanied and supported by the artistic groups of the Arena di Verona - Orchestra, Chorus, mimes and extras technicians. The chorus master is Salvo Sgrò and the Dance Company is directed by Renato Zanella.

Further performances:7, 20, 28 August at8:45 pm – 4 September at 8:45 pm.

Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia returns to the Arena for the fourth time with thisHugo de Ana production, which debuted with enormous success at the 2007 Festival and was staged again in 2009 and 2011. The extraordinary intriguing story of Rosina, who is saved by Figaro from the clutches of Don Bartolo to finish up in the arms of Count Almaviva, is all staged on the proscenium, ensuring the audience a perfect view of the refined 18th century costumes, which are a perfect match for the production’s surreal fable-like atmosphere. The theatrical fiction is highlighted by both the choreography of the overture, which brings to mind an enormous musical box, and the spectacular finale, which always manages to amaze and fascinate audiences.

A fantastic colourful world unfolds on stage, slightly reflective of the cinematographic world of Alice in Wonderland. An enormous jardin de l’amour with gigantic red roses and intricate hedge mazes which, enhanced by the Arena’s large spaces, is synonymous with the entanglement of a real comedy of errors, pervaded by a great vis comica, the very essence of Rossini’s opera buffa, composed to a libretto by Cesare Sterbini, which was in turn based on a 1775 dramatic play by Beaumarchais.
