What is CommonGround?
Common Ground is an undergraduate and graduate student led, peer-to-peer workshop program that facilitates communitydevelopment workshops on social identity and social justice in residence halls, student organizations, classrooms, and other venues.

These short, request-based workshops strive to promote and enhance awareness around social identity development and group dynamics, prejudice, stereotyping, power, privilege, and oppression. Through these workshops, both graduate and undergraduate students develop as facilitators while building a community of social justice educators on campus.

How many facilitators are needed?

In the pilot year of the program, we are hoping to start with anywhere from 8-15 facilitators in the program.

What is the program commitment?

IncomingWorkshop Facilitators are expected to attend a 2-day training retreat in September, facilitate 2-3 workshops per month, and attend monthly meetings. Though this is an unpaid, volunteer opportunity, CommonGround Workshop Facilitators have a history of a sustained commitment to facilitating and being a part of the social justice community on campus. Can I get a certificate for volunteering?

A CommonGround certificate that recognizes the personal contributions of Workshop Facilitators will be awarded.

Position Requirements:

  • Some prior facilitation experience (not necessarily with IGR) and basic knowledge about social justice concepts such as social identity, power, privilege, and oppression.
  • In following with the IGR mission, a commitment to the pursuit of social justice through education is vital.
  • Time and energy to commit to this position, including facilitating at least 2-3 workshops per month, which includes workshop preparation and administrative follow-up.
  • Attendance at a New Facilitator Orientation onFriday, January 29th from 5pm – 8pm, and a Weekend Training Retreat from Saturday, January30th at 8am to Sunday, January 31st at 6pm. (This may be an overnight retreat).
  • Attendance at monthly training programs on the first Thursday of each month from 5:30pm – 7:30pm: February 4th, March 4th, April 1st, May 6th, and June 3rd. Please reserve these dates in your calendar.

Timeline:
