Introduction
This is a 6”x22” wall hanging perfect for this time of year. We should be able to complete this project in the class time allowed. We will appliqué and quilt the hanging at the same time. There is a small amount of embroidery but as always there are other options if embroidery isn’t your thing. We will be doing raw edge appliqué.
Fabrics Needed
There are kits available that will have all the fabric for the top and floss for the embroidery. You will need to have a piece of fabric for the backing that should be about 8” by 24”. You will also need a piece of batting that is approximately the same size as the backing.
If you wish to make your own fabric choices you will need:
1/8 yd light for background Scraps: 5”x8” – canning jar
1/8 yd for border 6”x6” – gold (sunflower) and 5”x6” gold (sunflower)
1/8 yd for binding 3”x3” – sunflower centers, 2”x2” black eyed susan center
4”x4” – black eyed susan flower, 4”x5” – small flowers
2 different 5”x5” scraps green (leaves)
Fusible webbing (lightweight)
Pattern
Supplies
Sewing machine in working order that you are familiar with. (don’t forget your power cord or pedal)
If you have a walking foot for your machine it will be very helpful. (or dual feed)
An open toe attachment may also be helpful but not required. It will help you see where you are going when appliquéing.
Mechanical pencil. If you have a frixon pen that will be helpful for drawing the stems and words.
Scissors (paper and fabric)
Piecing thread and thread you would like to appliqué with. I used a medium brown silk thread on the entire project except the canning jar. I used a medium gray silk thread for that.
Pins.
Rotary cutter and a 6”x12” ruler will be sufficient.
An embroidery needle that has an eye large enough for 2 strands of floss to go through.
Seam ripper. ( as I always say for insurance purposes only )
Pre-Class Preparation
None.
