The proposed date for this year’s prize presentation/luncheon is the 26th January 2003 at the Ilkeston regency rooms. We shall provide you with further details in the next newsletter.

Hopefully we can get some of our other social ideas off the ground over the coming months. Interest has been shown in a cycling trip and paint balling. Come to the clubroom or out on a Sunday morning to discuss these further.

I fancy organising a go-karting trip and will hopefully get this one organised and actually done. Let me know if you are interested.

Looks like we are finally sorting ourselves out and getting our Sunday club run organised. The time and place is 9.00 am opposite the clubroom in Watnall.

If you need directions please give me a call on 07977 905802 or Matt 07753 754649.

We have a number of new members since the last newsletter. I would like to welcome them to the club and hope you enjoy riding and racing with us all.

Ed Parker starting well in the youth category finishing in 5th place.

In the senior event Matt Hallam had a flying start and lasted most of the event until a spectacular crash, while passing a back marker, took him out of the event. His handlebars bent inwards and made his machine unrideable. He was fighting for 10th place at the time.

Dave Smith was progressing well until his chain snapped. He ran back to the pits, which was some distance off, and finished on his space bike down in 84th place. Next up for problems was Derek Jones, our veteran of the team, who also encountered a snapped chain.

With Matt and Dave out of the running Mark was the lead Beauvale rider in 36th place. Mark Bird was next up in 56th place. Jason Felose, returning back to cyclo-cross after some 7 years away, was placed in 63rd then Andy Baker in 69th.

Shipley Park

Ed Parker improving on his pervious weeks result with 3rd spot.

Matt Hallam started well, taking the lead for most of the first lap. The bumpy dry course and his early effort took it’s toll and on Matt and finished in 19th place. Dave Smith, this time problem free, worked hard and took 33rd. Jason Felose this time on a new bike and getting a better start was 3rd Beauvale rider in 35th. Andy Baker finished in 41st and Mark Hallam, the last Beauvale rider in 45th.

Mark Bird had a snapped chain while warming up and after a quick repair was on the start line. But only a few yards into the start his chain snapped once again and was unable to complete the event.

Held at Belper Park in Derbyshire. Wayne Webster, Matt & Mark Hallam used this event as preparation for the winter cross season. Matt and Wayne started well and where fighting for 3rd and 4th positions. Wayne and Mark were both experiencing problems with derailed chains. Mark was forced to stop on numerous occasions each lap while Wayne ended up taking a fall and breaking his collarbone and his front wheel.

Matt fought hard and had to sprint at the finish and claimed 3rd spot. Mark finished down in 18th place.

Yet another warm up for the coming cross season.

Ross Simmons, Matt Hallam, Dave Smith, Dave Ash, Mark Bird and Derek Jones rode this evening event.

Ross was placed 2nd early on and was going well. Matt was encountering problems with his back wheel and was down in 9th position. Dave Smith, Mark Bird, Dave Ash and Derek all started well.

Disaster struck when Ross’s pedal came lose and dropped down the field. He then decided to entertain us with pulling wheeles down the finish straight.

Matt amazingly pulled it all back and gained 2nd on the line. Next was Dave Smith in 7th 5:57 minutes back, Ross in 11th, Mark Bird 15th, Derek Jones 24th and Dave Ash retired.

Dave Smith also started well and claimed 6th place. Mark Bird also rode and finished in 20th place.

Ashley Whipp won the final stage from a group, which contained the South African, his time bonus giving him the overall victory. Edward finished 7th overall and was the leading under 14 rider.

Matt Hallam riding alone in this event and involved in several breaks including one solo attempt lasting 12 laps.

Matt also attacked towards the end with a few riders but they were caught with 5 laps to go. Matt finished in the main field.

Edward Parker experienced the lows and the highs of cycle racing all in one day at the Manchester Velodrome on Saturday in the Under 14 Track Omnium National Championship. In the first event the 1500 metres pursuit, a time in the region of 1 minute 55 seconds was needed to get in the first few places. At 1000 metres, Edward was on schedule but the lap counter had already missed a lap and a confused Edward raced 1750 metres. His time of 2 minutes 17 seconds for 1750 metres was subsequently reduced to 1 minute 58 seconds but the damage had been done and a place in the first 3 was lost as he finished 5th.

An upset Edward was knocked further off balance by the news that the draw for the heats of the sprint had put 3 out of the 5 fastest riders in the pursuit in the same heat, this included the first and second placed riders from the BSCA National Sprint. Leading out the sprint too early Edward was pipped on the line and had to go through to the repechage. At this point only the support from the Talent Team Coach kept him going and he won his repechage heat easily with a last 200 metres time which proved to be the fastest of the competition at 13.06 seconds. He won his semi final to get in the final of the sprint which meant he was at least 4th in the sprint event. Bad luck then returned with a draw of lane four in a four man sprint. He fought hard to get in front and down to the bottom of the track but the experienced finalists kept him high on the banking and 4th was his final placing. At this point he was in 3rd position overall with a 5th and 4th place in the two events.

The last event was the 500 metre time trial where Edward was confident of a fast time after recording a time of 39.8 seconds the previous week at the slow Harvey Hadden Track. He was intent on beating Geraint Thomas's National Record of 36.9 seconds. The record proved too good but a time of 37.5 seconds gave Edward first place. In the confusion after the last event it was not initially clear who had won the event as Adam Blythe the clear leader after two events recorded a disappointing time of just over 40 seconds, which put him well down the field. The day then finished on a high as Edward was announced as the Track Omnium National Champion and he put on a second National Championship jersey in a matter of weeks.

Mark and Jason controlled the race well and both felt strong. Attacks from both the Beauvale riders were chased down and it all came down to the sprint. Mark raised the speed in the closing laps to encourage more riders to take the front towards the finish. Jason placed himself well in the final lap and attached on the last tight bend. He sprinted all the way to the finish but was just pipped on the line and placed second. Jason obtained 5 points towards his 3rd category licence and only needs 1 further point to move up. Mark finished in the main field.

·  3rd Category - The squad achieved a 4th place with Mark Plowright from Beeston RC. Matt finished in the main field.

·  4th Category - The squad achieved a 2nd place with a rider from Sherwood CC. Mark Hallam and Jason Felose both failed to complete the event.

With over 70 riders in the under 14 category and 90 riders in the under 16 category, an extra race was put on to include under 14's and 16's to reduce the size of each race field. Edward was one of the under 14's selected to ride up a category with the under 16's.

In a four stage race, Edward found the speed of the leaders too hot to handle in the two flatter stages, finishing 11th and 7th. On the opening hilly Prologue Time Trial, he finished 2nd just half a second down on the South African National Champion.

Edward produced a major impact on the final result on the hilly 3rd stage. With 10 laps of a circuit in Heaton Park, which included a steep hill complete with uneven potholed surface. Edward maintained contact with the leaders throughout the early laps. By lap eight there was only six riders in the leading group with Edward putting on the pressure up the hill. By the summit the only rider able to hold his wheel was Ashley Whipp (Isle of Man), while the South African yellow jersey was in severe difficulty. Wanting to gain as much time on GC as possible, Edward plunged down the descent for the last time with Ashley, the second placed rider on GC, hanging on. Ashley was unable to contribute to the break at anytime during this lap but he was gaining valuable time on the yellow jersey by the tow he was getting from Edward. Last time up the hill, Edward maintained the pressure and won the stage by a few lengths, with the yellow jersey losing time, his lead was cut to one second with one stage left.
