IF YOU ENROLL IN AP FRENCH DURING THE SUMMER, PLEASE CONTACT MADAME WATSON AT . –MERCI!

Dear Students and Parents,

I am very excited and honored to be your AP French teacher this coming school year! As your AP French teacher, I will provide you with lots of opportunities to practice French in class. I will make sure to provide a variety of different activities which will prepare you for the AP French exam. However, the students who perform the best on the exam are the students who listen to French music, watch French movies, speak French with friends, read French articles, read French blogs and do other activities to practice French on their own time.

In order to prepare for this course, I have prepared some assignments for you to complete during the summer.

To incorporate each aspect of language acquisition (listening, speaking, reading, & writing), you will be asked to do a variety of assignments: video introduction (and reactions), article summaries, vocabulary acquisition, and an assignment where you will be required to inform yourself about the exam and assess your strengths and weaknesses as they relate to the exam. You can find a description of each assignment (with due dates) below.

VOCABULARY BUILDING – ongoing, use this vocabulary in your summer assignment

  • Use the following quizlet website to learn approximately 65 common French phrases and transition words (you should already know many of these). You will be expected to use these phrases and transition words in the writing that you do during your summer assignment.
    You can make flashcards, play the Quizlet games, etc.:

VIDEO INTRODUCTION – due JUNE 9 in the Dropbox on the eClass page; reactions due JUNE 16;

responses due JUNE 23

  • Post an introductory video of yourself, en français, bien sûr to introduce yourself to your classmates. Tell them about yourself (basic information) and your likes and dislikes. Tell them what you are going to do (or hope to do) this summer AND one thing that you DID (passé composé) over Memorial Day Weekend. Additionally, tell them what you hope to achieve next year in AP French class. Lastly, talk to them about a passion of yours that is centered on one of the six global themes (feel free to use a dictionary or wordreference.com to look up unknown words). Your video should be 1-2 minutes long. This will be a CW/HW grade! You may need to upload your video to YouTube and put the link in the Dropbox. Make sure to make your video “public” so that we can view it.
  • In addition to the introductory video, you MUST comment (in written form, en français) on two different classmates’ videos (on the Discussion Board on eClass). You must react to what they say and ask them questions about what they talked about. Lastly, you MUST respond to anyone who comments on your video. This portion of the assignment will be due JUNE 16. Your responses to the reactions are due by JUNE 23.

ARTICLE/LISTENING REPORT SUMMARIES – 4 total, due dates vary; article #1 one due by JUNE 23

  • You will be required to read 2 and listen to 2 French articles throughout the summer and submit an outline for each article (see attached for instructions). If you miss the due date, you will receive a “0”. You may choose your articles from OR Remember: Google Translate is NOT your friend! I would much rather see “broken” and grammatically incorrect French and know that you did this on your own, than to read something that has been translated or copied directly from the article, which will result in a grade of “0”.

EXAM FAMILIARIZATION AND SELF-ASSESSMENT - due August 7 at 8:00 AM, the first day of school, but the assignment will not open until July 31st at 8:00 AM, as I want you to consider the work you have done and how it has helped you to identify strengths, weaknesses, and strategies.

  • Go to the AP website for the French Language and Culture Exam and learn everything you can about the exam: format, scoring, length, date, etc.

    There are several links to exam format, sample questions and audios, as well as general information.
  • Put in the Dropbox on eClass a 150-word minimum written word document in English that explains what you have learned about the exam (including the themes) and what parts of the test you think will be the hardest for you. Include some strategies for how you will prepare yourself for the course and ultimately for the test, both in and outside of class. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM THE WEBSITE – reflect on the exam format and on your strengths and weaknesses in French.
  • This is a HW/CW grade. All assignments will be graded on quality and accuracy.

Familiarize yourself with the 6 AP themes; everything we do will relate to one (or more) of these themes!
