IDENTIFYING DEVICES-INTERIOR SIGNS (MODULAR)
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES
A. This section specifies interior identification signs.
1.2 RELATED SECTIONS

1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Samples: Submit one sample sign in size illustrating type, style, letter font and colors specified; method of attachment.
B. Shop Drawings: Identify layout, materials, size letter form, letter height, mounting, finishes and accessory items.
C. Manufacturer’s Literature: Include Manufacturer’s printed installation instructions and attachment devices.
1.4 QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing the Products specified in this section with
minimum five years experience.
1.5 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
A. Conform to applicable code, Americans with Disabilities Architectural Guidelines (ADA-AG) and ANSI

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND PROTECTION
A. Package to prevent damage or deterioration during shipment, handling, storage and installation. Maintain protective coverings in place and in good repair until removal is necessary. Store products in dry condition inside enclosed facilities.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Provide manufacturer’s warranty against defect in materials for minimum one (1) year. Warranty shall provide material and labor to replace defective materials. Damage caused by physical or chemical abuse or damage from excessive heat will not be warranted. Removal and reinstallation is not warranted.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL
Signs and graphic components are to be by a single manufacturer, including necessary mounting options, fittings and fastenings.
2.2 SIGN STANDARDS
A. Typography:
1. Type style: see attached drawings. Copy shall be a true, clean, accurate reproduction of typeface(s) specified. Upper and lower case or all caps as indicated in Sign Type drawings and Signage Schedule. Letter spacing to be normal and interline spacing shall be set by manufacturer.
2. Arrows, symbols and logo art: To be provided in style, sizes, colors and spacing as shown in drawings.
3. Braille: Grade 2 perfectly round, clear Braille beads.
4. Translations: Grade 2 Braille copy is responsibility of the sign manufacturer.
B. Project Colors and Finishes:
1. Typography: see drawings
2. Message Tile Background: see drawings
3. End Cap/Side Kick/Module: see drawings
C. Project Finishes:
1. Finishes are to meet current Federal ADA and any State requirements.
2. Finish is to be matte, 11 to 19 degrees on a 60 degree glossmeter.
2.3 SIGNS
A. General
1. Provide products produced by Appenx Inc. 1730 Lincoln Ave, Holland MI 49423, 1(800) 443-6032,
Fax 1 (616) 396-6588 or approved equal.
2. Other manufacturers must submit their products, for Architects approval, prior to bid date to be
considered as an equal. Substitutions are made under provisions of Section 01600.
B. Interchangeable Component Sign System:
1. The Appenx interchangeable Component Sign System shall consist of an aluminum module subassembly, Slide-in or snap-in Message Tiles and Interlocking End Caps.
a. Interior sign system is capable of accepting slide-in or snap-in message tiles in various sizes and shapes that are interchangeable anywhere within the face surface of the sign or any other sign using the same design and construction.
b. Interchangeable nature of the system will allow for changes of graphic components of the
installed sign without changing the sign in its entirety.
2. Aluminum Module Subassembly:
a. Aluminum Module Subassembly utilizes individual .050 thick 6063-T5 extruded aluminum
modules, etched and clear anodized, secured to a .032 thick 6061-T6 backer plate as the base structure of the sign.
b. Aluminum Module Subassembly shall be capable of accepting message tiles on one or both
sides, depending upon sign style.
c. Aluminum Module Subassembly shall be capable of a variety of mounting options including:
pressure-sensitive mounting tape, (concealed) screws, magnetic cylinders (neodymium), velcro, pin device for fabric surfaces, system-panel brackets, 90 degree wall projection, freestanding, ceiling grid brackets, ceiling cable and other mounting devices as needed.
C. Message Tiles:
a. Message Tiles accept various forms of copy and graphics and slide onto or snap into the Module Subassembly.
b. Message Tiles are interchangeable by sliding horizontally from either side of the sign or snap into the face surface and to other signs in the system of equal width or height.
c. Message Tiles are cleanable without use of special chemicals or cleaning solutions.
d. Message Tile Materials:
1. Fine matte acrylic - .118 thick with an acrylic lacquer finish on back surface.
2. Aluminum Tiles - .026 thick decorative aluminum sheet precision cut and pressure bonded to a 6063-T5 aluminum extrusion using adhesive.
3. Paper Insert – 6063-T5 extruded aluminum channel with a 010 polycarbonate lens
(1”-3”h). 6063-T5 extruded aluminum lens retainer
4. Dimensional– 1/8” thick matte acrylic letters embedded into 3/32” matte surface
acrylic face plate. Letters and background color of face plate painted with acrylic lacquer on second surface.
5. Tactile(ADA) – includes dimensional letters as described above and 1/32” high clear
acrylic, perfectly round Grade 2 Braille bead message translation.
6. Subsurface – 7 mil bright white gloss white gloss polyester film bonded to second surface
118 non-glare acrylic tiles with optically clear, pressure sensitive acrylic mounting
adhesive.
7. Second Surface – 2 mil high performance vinyl adhered to second surface .093 non-glare
acrylic tiles. Background color of faceplate painted enamel on the second surface.
8. Second Surface Insert – 6063-T5 extruded aluminum channel with a matte surface.015 polycarbonate lens insert. Vinyl lettering and painted enamel on the second surface.
9. Mosaic – .080” matte acrylic pieces on the face surface of a clear substrate to form a graphic image.
10. Page Insert (high profile) – 6063-T5 aluminum lens retainer with a ½” reveal for paper inserts with a .060 non-glare acrylic lens (4”h+)..
11. Page Insert (low profile) – 6063-T5 aluminum lens retainer with a 1/8” reveal for paper inserts with .060 or.118 non-glare acrylic or .230 clear simulated glass acrylic lens (4”h+).
D. End Caps/Side Kicks:
a. Extruded 6063-T5 aluminum End Caps/Side Kicks enclose the module subassembly using screw, slide-on clip, locking clip or permanent attachments.
b. Finish – anodized or painted with acrylic lacquer in standard colors
c. Interchangeable to either end of sign and to other signs in the system of equal height.
E. Graphic Process
a. Vinyl Letters – first surface applied High Performance Cast PVC Vinyl copy.
b. Dimensional– 1/8” thick matte acrylic letters embedded into 3/32” matte surface acrylic face plate.
c. Paper Inserts - .010 clear polycarbonate lens with paper insert initially supplied by Appenx.
2.5 FABRICATION
A. Design components to allow for expansion and contraction for a minimum material temperature range of 56 degree C (100 degree F) without causing buckling, excessive opening of joints or over stressing of adhesives and fasteners.
B. Form signs to required shapes and sizes with true curves, lines and angles. Provide necessary rebates, lugs and brackets for assembly of units.
C. Contact surfaces of connected members be true. Assembled so joints will be tight and practically unnoticeable.
D. Signs shall have fine, even texture and be flat and sound. Lines and miters sharp, arises unbroken, profiles accurate and ornament true to pattern. Plane surfaces be smooth, flat and without oil-canning, free of rack and twist. Maximum variation from plane of surface plus or minus 0.015 inch.
E. Members shall have sharp lines and angles and smooth surfaces.
F. Extruded members to be free from extrusion marks. Square turns and corners sharp, curves true.
G. Conceal fastenings where possible. Exposed ends and edges mill smooth with corners slightly rounded.
H. All painted surfaces properly primed. Finish coating of paint to have complete coverage with no light or thin applications allowing substrate or primer to show. Finished surface smooth, free of scratches, gouges, drips, bubbles, thickness variations, foreign matter and other imperfections.
I. Movable parts, including hardware, are to be cleaned and adjusted to operate as designed without binding of deformation of members. All contact surfaces fit tight and even without forcing or warping components.
J. Shop fabricate so far as practicable and pre-assemble items to the greatest extent possible to minimize field splicing and assembly. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for re-assembly and coordinated installation.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Protect products against damage during field handling and installation. Protect adjacent existing and newly placed construction as necessary to prevent damage during installation. Paint and touch up any exposed fasteners and connecting hardware to match color and finish of surrounding surface.
B. Mount signs in proper alignment, level and plumb according to the sign location plan and the dimensions given on the elevation and sign location drawings. Where otherwise not dimensioned, signs shall be installed where best suited to provide a constant appearance throughout the project. When exact position, angle, height or location is in doubt, contact Architect for clarification.
C. At completion of sign installation, clean exposed sign surfaces. Clean and repair any adjoining surfaces that become soiled or damaged as a result of installation of signs.
D. Locate signs as shown on the Sign Location Plans.
E. At completion of installation turn over any additional stock of signs and sign components listed in Signage Schedule.
3.2 SIGNAGE SCHEDULE
A. The Signage Schedule and the Sign Location Plans are inter-related documents. These documents represent location, type and total number of signs required.
B. Contractor shall clarify any perceived irregularities in the Signage Schedule, sign mounting elevations and sign location plans
