Ideas Box Size & Weight

The unpacked Ideas Box separates into 6 modules mounted on wheels, each of a

maximum weight of 130kg.

Volume: The Ideas Box fits on 2 standard transportation pallets (European standard size - 80 * 120 * 160cm).

General Concept

For our presentations, we prefer to display 2 Ideas Box sets, one unpacked and the other in
“transportation mode” (closed and on pallets). Showing both allows us to demonstrate how such a small set of 6 boxes can expand into such a large community center once opened.

Ideally, we would like to show the Ideas Box where ALA conference attendees would regularly pass through. The more opportunities to engage with passersby, the better!

Set-Up

A minimum of 60m2 would provide space for visitors to move between modules. A smooth floor is preferable to allow for wheeling of the modules. If weather conditions permit it, presenting the Ideas Box outdoors is possible. Access to electrical outlets would also be appreciated, but not required.

Unpacking: The Ideas Box can be unpacked and set up in less than 20 minutes. However, for the ALA conference, we would prefer to have access to the space 3 hours prior to the official start-time of the presentation.

At the site, a pallet truck to lower the Ideas Box from the truck would be appreciated, but not necessary.

Storage

The floor space required for storage is 2m². Minimum height: 1.60m. The storage space must be secure.

Programming

We propose a 60-minute presentation, with 30-additional minutes of Q&A.

During this presentation, we would discuss evaluations and lessons learned from current Ideas Box programs in UNHCR refugee camps, in Australia, and in France. We would also discuss ongoing plans to create Ideas Box programs with Native American communities, and low-income urban communities in the US. During this presentation, we would also speak about our existing technology partners, such as Khan Academy and Code Academy.

Budget

The ALA’s financial support is sincerely appreciated, to make this Ideas Box presentation possible.

Current rates show a round-trip flight from Boston to San Francisco via JetBlue at $548. We would also like to bring our Director of Development from Paris to discuss our ongoing operations, partnerships, and directions moving forwards. Current rates show a round-trip flight from Paris to San Francisco via Lufthansa at $1519.

According to the YRC Company estimate, freight transportation of the Ideas Box from Washington D.C. (we plan to exhibit the Ideas Box at the World Bank in April) to San Francisco would cost $1626.44, excluding insurance.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m happy to speak more about the Ideas Box anytime!
