Ph.D. Steps to Graduation
Step 1: Application for admission into Ph.D. program.
Step 2: Review of the application by faculty.
Step 3: Application approved/disapproved by department and then returned to the Graduate School.
Step 4: The Graduate School writes an acceptance or rejection letter to the applicant.
Step 5: The Ph.D. Program of Study – Planned, form is submitted and approved. (Form below)
Step 6: A 3-member Ph.D. Advisory Committee is formed. Two members from parent department and one from another relevant department. (Form below)
Step 7: An 8-hour Written Qualifying Examination is administered by the Ph.D. Advisory Committee by the end of the 3rd semester as an ISU graduate student. The student is allowed two attempts to pass the exam.
Step 8: Upon satisfactory completion of the Written Qualifying Examination, the student is admitted to candidacy by submitting Report on Outcome of Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination. (Form below)
Step 9: A 5-member Ph.D. Dissertation Committee is formed. The major advisor (chair), two others from parent department, one from another relevant department, and graduate faculty representative (GFR). (Form below)
Step 10: The Dissertation Committee monitors the student's progress in research and the student presents and defends their PhD research proposal to this committee, in a 2-hour Oral Dissertation Proposal Defense, usually in the 4th semester as an ISU graduate student. (Form below)
Step 11: Submit Final Program of Study. (Form below)
Step 12: The candidate makes a public presentation of the dissertation and satisfactory oral defense to the Ph.D. Dissertation Committee. The candidate graduates with a Ph.D. in Geosciences!
