Students will appreciate the influence of diverse Aboriginal, French and British peoples on events leading to Confederation.
7.1.3 Students will compare and contrast diverse social and economic structures within the societies of Aboriginal, French and British peoples in pre-Confederation Canada by exploring and reflecting upon questions and issues from 7.1.3 / Background: This activity addresses the first bullet under this SO i.e., What were the different ways in which Aboriginal societies (Iroquois Confederacy, Ojibwa, and Mi’kmaq) were structured, but may be used for many of the bullets.
Procedure:
1. Students research the structure of the three Aboriginal societies using various resources.
2. Students record their points using the Venn diagram tool at http://interactives.mped.org/ view_interactive.aspx?id=28&title=
Students must fill in their name and the titles of the circles. Students can then choose to begin with either the Venn diagram or a list of characteristics.
3. Choosing the Venn Diagram: Ensure students fill in their name and the titles of the circles. Click on the “Begin with the Venn Diagram” arrow. To add characteristics, click on the “Add Item” box. Students then type the item in the “Text” section.
4. Choosing “Begin by Making a List”: Students type in the characteristics into three screens – one for each of the Aboriginal Group. Items may be in any order.
5. Creating the Venn Diagram: Choose “Start”. Students may then drag the text to the appropriate section of the circle. Choosing “Next Item” to retrieve the rest of their characteristics. Students may also add and edit items.
