Instructional Assistant – Family Advocate / ERSA

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent or special diploma required.
Associate of Arts or Sciences or Higher from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must complete 18 clock hours of annual in-service training specific to family literacy components
Experience in a child care setting.
Must be capable of making home visits with own transportation.
Valid Florida Driver License.

Job Goal
To provide families and parents with training and support as their child’s first teacher through center and home-based instruction.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to listen and empathize with target families; possess and demonstrate effective verbal communication skills; possess and demonstrate effective written communication skills for record keeping and report writing; ability to make home visits with own transportation; knowledge of child development; ability to understand and follow directions.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions

Plan and implement developmental activities for infants and toddlers.
Maintain sanitary environment
Make home visits several times per week.
Maintain required paperwork including anecdotal records related to home visits.
Plan and supervise parent interaction with infants/toddlers
Provide positive role modeling of parental skills.
Screen and recruit eligible Even Start families.
Feed infants/toddlers.
Physically lift and handle infants/toddlers.
Physically interact in play activities with infants/toddlers.
Provide families with training and support as their child’s first teacher and empower parents with effectiveparenting skills.
Assist parent by providing guidance on home safety, nutrition, effective discipline, constructive play activities and other topics.
Inform parents about stages of child development and suggest methods for parents to encourage their children’sintellectual, language, physical, and social skills.
Ride a bus with students with disabilities to ensure their safety.
Provide outstanding customer service, and use positive interpersonal communication skills.
Make all decisions and perform all tasks in accordance with Brevard Public Schools' Organizational Values.
Ensure compliance with Board rules and applicable federal laws and regulations.

1. / Assist clients with appropriate referral services (financial, legal, medical, educational, etc.).
2. / Keep updated on current child development, health and safety information.
3. / Assist children in using playground equipment, including pull and ride-one toys.
4. / Assist children in using gardening tools for outdoor activities.
5. / Assist children with cooking activities
6. / Perform other incidental tasks or services consistent with the job goal of this position.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
