September Edition

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to Grade 1. I hope that you all had an enjoyable summer and I look forward to having a very exciting year together. I feel that communication is very important; therefore I will be sending you a copy of “ONEderful NEWS” every month along with a classroom calendar. I have designed this newsletter with the purpose of keeping you informed of your child’s learning and school experiences.

It will include:

-Highlights from several areas of your child’s learning so that we can work together to enhance your child’s understanding of the material being taught at a given time. This also helps to make the learning meaningful for your child.

-Birthdays, celebrations, students of the month, and other exciting news.

-Updates and announcements

We hope that you will take time to read the newsletter and share it with your child.

HAPPY READING!

Upcoming Learning

This month the students will be learning many new and exciting things. Please work with your child at

home and encourage their learning in the following areas:

LANGUAGE

Please encourage your child to read daily. When they come to words that they do not know you can help by reminding them to use some of the following reading strategies: sounding out, breaking up the words, looking at the pictures, reading around the word to see what could make sense, and look and listen for letter patterns found in words. They should also be writing simple sentences such as “I like… because…, I went to…, On the weekend… Please encourage them to write and sound out the words on their own.

MATH

Data Management- Your child will be learning to describe and sort various objects into groups. (ie. birds, airplanes and kites could be grouped together because they can all be found in the sky). You can help your child by having them describe and sort various objects and animals. You can cut and use pictures from magazines to do this. You can play a sorting game with them by naming a group of things (ie. pencil eraser, ruler, glue and crayons) and then asking them why they think you put them together (ie. they are all school tools). In math they will also be asked to make tally charts and to organize information using graphs. (ie. Ask a group of people what their favourite colour is and then colour a square on a graph to show their choices. At home, have your child make their own graphs by surveying family members.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Rules and Responsibilities- This month we will be learning about the rules and responsibilities that the children have at school, home and their community. They will be expected to identify the rules and apply them to his/her own life. Please regularly review our Classroom Agreements (
