1. While hunting for eagles, Wahlitis and his father are attacked by Joe Grant. He accuses the Indians of stealing five cattle horses acres. When Grant offers to shake the older Indian’s hand, he instead hits shoots ropes him. Wahlitis promises revenge, but his father asks him to do nothing find Chief Joseph before he dies.

2. When Wahlitis returns to his tribe with his father’s body, he again asks for punishment, but Chief Joseph says it is easy to fire load raise a rifle but hard to put it down.

3. Wahlitis asks Ollokot, the leader secretary youngest of the young men to lead them into war. Ollokot says he is angry ready saddened , but will listen to Joseph, because it takes half a majority all of the chiefs to decide to go to war.

4. Joseph says that General Howard has summoned the Nez Perce to a council trial dance, and they will make the case against Joe Grant then.

5. In the Wallowa Valley in May of the year 1875 1877 1879, only three bands of the Nez Perce tribe remain outside a reservation.

6. General Oliver Howard is a very compassionate man, and founded a university for Indians Blacks Irish. He is now the Army commander in the Northwest and is bringing new instructions from Washington to the tribe.

7. General Howard gives Joseph a toy doll hat for his soon-to-be-born child. The General’s daughter niece wife made it.

8. When Joseph brings up the matter of Joe Grant, the Indian “agent”, Monteith, tells him that the trial of non-Indians (civilians) is a civilian matter and he is wasting the General’s time. Howard, however, gives his personal sign word that he will assume responsibility for the arrest of Grant.

9. Monteith hands the Indians new orders. They have 7 20 30 days to move from the Wallowa Valley in Oregon to a reservation in Idaho.

10. Joseph reminds the officials that only 10 20 30 years before, his father had signed a treaty that leaves the Nez Perce free in the valley “for all time”.

11. Ollokot refuses to accept the orders and leaves. Joseph compares the order to give up their land like a neighbor selling another man’s

land horses family.

12. Howard gives Joseph 2 4 6 days to talk to his chiefs and persuade them to go to the reservation peacefully.

13. When Wood and Howard are alone, the general admits that the new policy is right wrong , but they are Americans soldiers powerless and they have orders.

14. At a chief’s council, most of the chiefs are for peace war. Chief Joseph says that the Nez Perce must live with the white man’s force or he will destroy absorb welcome us. Joseph says they must go to the reservation.

15. Several young Nez Perce go to a farm fort bar and find Joe Grant. Wahlitis knifes shoots tackles Grant.

16. Joseph’s wife has given birth to a baby boy girl. Joseph asks his wife for a name. She decides on Tiwiwas, which means “the bow string that will not break bend shoot.

17. Joseph’s wife wants does not want to go to the reservation. She worries about the children at the Indian schools.

18. When the young warriors return, Joseph realizes that the whites will get revenge for Grant’s murder. Joseph wants to talk to Grant’s family Gen. Howard, but until he can, the tribe will “go to a safe place far-away place unknown place where we can talk or fight.”

19. The Army arrives, but led by Captain Perry, not General Howard. Also with the cavalry is a group of “volunteers”, homesteaders from the area, who are ordered to stay behind the hill soldiers rocks.

20. One of the “volunteers” fires, hitting one of the Nez Perce. The Nez Perce warriors come from the sides behind, forcing the cavalry to retreat attack with 34 men killed.

21. When Captain Perry reports to General Howard, Howard says, “Your civilians have started a war truce .”

22. General Howard has decided to lead a force to pursue destroy the Nez Perce and find Joseph. Captain Perry will go to the Salmon River with a group of scouts to find Chief Joseph.

23. On June 28, 1877, the scouts find the Nez Perce at Whitebird Canyon. The soldiers have the Indians outmanned by 2 3 5 to 1.

23. Howard’s plan is to divide his forces. The infantry will pretend to prepare an attack, while Howard will lead the cavalry artillery , cross the river, and attack behind Joseph’s camp at dawn.

24. When Howard arrives at Joseph’s camp, he finds the Nez Perce are

ready to fight gone but have crossed the river behind Howard.

25. A total of 500 600 700 Nez Perce, mostly women, children, and older menare fleeing from the army. Five hours days weeks later, the tribe travels across the Lolo Trail, where Lewis and Clark walked more than 70 years before.

26. The Nez Perce have won few most all of the battles and skirmishes so far, but many of the tribe are dying. Looking Glass suggests that they rest, but Joseph thinks that they might have to go as far as Dakota Nebraska Canada to escape.

27. General Howard orders two soldiers to return to the post and send a battalion telegraph tothe Army in Montana to open block the end of the Lolo Trail so that the Nez Perce cannot enter the Bitterroot Valley.

28. However, the Nez Perce escape the trap by unexpectedly crossing over a canyon mountain valley.

29. The Nez Perce head south into Montana Wyoming and enter Big Hole, a valley deep inside the Bitterroots. They hope the war is behind them.

30. General Gibbons’ artillery scouts have found the Nez Perce. Gibbons “wires” Howard, and says he will “engage” the Indians until Howard’s forces arrive.

31. When Gibbon’s men attack, they almost win, but Joseph orders his warriors to retreat attack , and the soldiers are forced to retreat.

32. The Army then uses artillery infantry to attack the tribe. Joseph says the Nez Perce must travel south to the land of the Shoshone Crow Indians.

33. Joseph’s mother wife and child have been injured in the attack.

34. After the fight at Big Hole, some Nez Perce takes revenge payment for the killings by striking at stray “whites” in their path. They also enter Glacier Yellowstone Grand Teton National Park, and more columns of soldiers are converging on the tribe.

35. Correspondents, newspaper reporters, have arrived asking questions. General Howard says that Chief Joseph is the best Indian general he has ever fought.

36. The reporters tell him that national attention sympathy anger is turning toward the Nez Perce.

37. The top general in the Army, General Sherman, sends General Howard a telegraph. He says if Howard is too old tired unable, give his command to some “energetic” young officer.

38. Captain Wood gives a suggestion, but Howard wires Sherman that he will resign keep his command.

39. The Crows will not help the Nez Perce; Ollokot thinks it is because they are weak afraid shy.

40. Some of the young warriors have captured a wagon stagecoach oxcart with passengers. One of the passengers is a prospector looking for gold.

41. The Nez Perce order the prospector to tell him how to get away from the Army. He tells them not to follow the Clark’s Fork, but the Salmon Shoshone Snake River.

42. Knowing the prospector will tell the Army, Joseph decided to take the Clark Lewis Seamans ’s Fork River instead.

43. Colonel Sturgis and the 5 7 9 th Cavalry are waiting at the end of the Clark’s Fork canyon for Joseph, but they decide to move to the Shoshone.

44. Sturgis realizes that he has followed a false trail, but now, Howard thinks that Joseph is at least 50 100 500 miles ahead of the Army.

45. The 2nd Cavalry is still ahead of Joseph, but will need time to reach them. Howard decides to speed up slow down and hopes that the Nez Perce will do the same thing.

46. The Nez Perce are nearing Canada, but Joseph decides to camp travel for one night before entering the country.

47. Wood and Howard discuss whether it is right to continue pursuing the Nez Perce. Captain Wood thinks Americans should treat Indians like cattle human beings slaves and respect their rights. Howard says the lesson of history is the worthy strong right always dominate the weak.

48. Wood asks Howard if he were Joseph, what would he have done. Howard replies, “Exactly what Nez Perce Ollokot Joseph has done.”

49. “I’m the general who’s fighting for the right better wrong cause.”

50. The Nez Perce have traveled 1,600 miles in 7 9 11 weeks!

51. Suddenly, the Nez Perce find themselves under attack water on all sides by the 2nd Cavalry.

52. At a chief’s council, White Bird suggests they escape fight in the night. Yellow Wolf says they should fight escape like warriors. Joseph says instead of thinking about the adults or warriors, they should think about the older people children , who have not chosen to die.

53. Joseph asks Yellow Wolf to take his father family to Canada.

54. The Nez Perce ended only 20 40 60 miles from Canada.

55. Joseph approaches the Army officers. He is afraid tired of fighting.

56. “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more today always forever .”

57. As a gesture of honor, General Howard waves at removes his hat salutes Chief Joseph.

58. Chief Joseph was honored by the U.S. government, but he was never allowed to live return to the Wallowa Valley. He died in September of the year 1902 1903 1904 at the Colville Reservation in Eastern Washington-according to his doctor, of a broken heart.
