“God’s Wisdom”

Jarrod Jacobs

One thing that is lacking in this world is an appreciation for and obedience to the wisdom of God. What can one study, or read to obtain God’s wisdom? It is the Bible! True, the entire Bible contains God’s wisdom. However, in this study, let us focus our attention on the Psalms. Please read the verses listed below carefully and then we will make applications to our lives.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”(Ps. 119:11).

“I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word”(Ps. 119:16).

“Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart”(Ps. 119:34).

“Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed”(Ps. 119:80).

“O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.”(Ps. 119:97-100).

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple”(Ps. 119:130).

God’s Wisdom Needs To Be Remembered

David realized that the wisdom that God gives us needs to be remembered at all times (Ps. 119:11, 16). In fact, the first psalm shows that the righteous will gladly meditate in God’s law at all times (Ps. 1:2). Jesus, while on the earth, showed us by example that when we remember God’s word, we can defeat Satan (Lk. 4:1-13). The apostle Peter wrote,“Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as ourLord Jesus Christhath showed me. Moreover I will endeavor that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance”(II Pet. 1:12-15). Are we remembering the wisdom of God as we ought?

God’s Wisdom Is Not Shameful

David declared that he was not ashamed of the wisdom of God (Ps. 119:80). Theapostle Paulwrote the Romans and stated plainly,“For I am not ashamed of thegospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek”(Rom. 1:16). Sadly, there are many in this world who think it a shameful thing to have a knowledge of the word of God. Sometimes folks are ridiculed or laughed at for knowing the word of God and being interested in such. This is wrong. God teaches us that we should not be ashamed of knowing His word and applying His wisdom to our lives (Ps. 119:80; II Tim. 2:15).

God’s Wisdom Involves Obedience

Please notice that it is not enough simply to have an academic knowledge of God’s wisdom. When we read through the list of passages in the Psalms, we see it is also necessary toapplywhat we learn in God’s word (Ps. 119:34). Jesus taught that the wise man was wise because he was the one who not only heard God’s word, butobeyedit as well (Matt. 7:24-27). What a tragedy to see people who know what to do to please God, and then refuse to do it! They may have many excuses for their disobedience, but ultimately they will not be sufficient when standing before Christ our judge and giving an account for what we have done while on this earth (II Cor. 5:10). Let us decide that we will meditate and study God’s wisdom now, and make proper applications to our lives before it is too late.

God’s Wisdom Makes Us Wiser Than The World

Regardless of the wisdom the world may proclaim, God’s wisdom makes us wiser than the world (Ps. 119:97-100; Isa. 55:8-9). God looks on the world’s wisdom as foolishness that passes away (I Cor. 1:18-21; II Jn. 2:17). The longer we live, the more we can see that such is the case. Let us take heed to God’s wisdom now, and walk in it (Col. 4:5a) as long as we live!
