Dear Parent/Guardian,

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to the Louis Armstrong Middle School. We are just beginning what should be a very productive and challenging year and we are looking forward to working with you. This letter serves as a brief overview of some important information you need to have.

  • School attendance is a vital component of a successful school year. We expect every student to come to school prepared with homework and supplies every day. If your child is absent, we ask that an absence note is brought in upon their return.
  • The student planner (which will be given out in September) is where your child will record all homework assignments and upcoming test dates. We will also use this planner to communicate with you. Please talk with you child and check the planner on a daily basis to ensure that he/she is doing his homework and preparing for tests. Be sure to sign and respond to any notes you may find from us in the planner. Should your child be absent, it is his responsibility to contact a classmate for any missed work and for assignments that were given. Students will be given the opportunity to exchange phone numbers during the first few days of school. Please give your child permission to share this information.
  • We will be setting up a Remind.com site for you to join. This is a courtesy site that will allow us to alert you via text or email to certain test dates and other important information as we see necessary. Please make every effort to sign up on this site when you receive instructions in the very near future.
  • All tests will require your signature so that we know you are informed as to your child’s progress.
  • Your child is expected to already know the multiplication facts through the twelvetimes table. A sample of the timed multiplication test that will be given on a regular basis will be handed out in class, as well as a study sheet. Please make copies of the test and let your child practice at home. Once evidence of mastery is shown (95% or better), your child will no longer have to take the test.
  • Students will be required to read for at least 45 minutes every evening. This is a vital component of our reading and writing curriculum.
  • Any money that is sent in to school should be placed in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, amount, and purpose for the money.
  • On a regular basis, your child will have the opportunity to order books through Scholastic book clubs. We encourage you to allow your child to build a home library, which might include some of these quality books. While personal checks are accepted for these purchases, cash is preferred. These purchases are completely voluntary.
  • A supply list has been provided. Please send these supplies in by Tuesday, September 13th.

Most importantly, we want you and your child to know that we will be expecting a great deal of effort and participation from him/her. We appreciate and look forward to your involvement, as your support and concern are necessary for your child’s success. Please feel free to contact us at any time by either writing a note in the planner or calling the school at the number above, and leaving a message. We will get back to you as quickly as possible.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and look forward to working with you and your child this year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Smith and Ms. Andosca
