I’m sure you have many questions

about science class this year.

I’ve tried to ask some of them for you

AND give you the answers.

1.  Who is my teacher?

My name is Mrs. Wyman. This is my third year as a science teacher here at Pioneer Middle School. I previously taught 8th grade science in Amherst, NY. Before I became a science teacher, I worked in the financial and medical sales industry. I’m looking forward to being your science teacher this year!

2.What do I need for class?

*  Blue science folders and paper

*  blue or black pens ( no sparkly gel ink, please…I can’t see it!)

*  pencils

* a positive attitude and a willingness to succeed!

Please bring these things every day!

3.What is expected of me?

I expect each person in my class to be:

ü  Respectful

ü  Responsible

ü  Ready

4.What can I expect from Mrs. Wyman?

J I will treat each of you fairly and with respect.

J I will always try to make science exciting and fun.

J I will always work with anyone who needs help.

J  I will do whatever I can to help all of you succeed!

5.What should I do when I come in to class each day?

ü  I expect each of you to walk in quietly and sit in your assigned seats.

ü  I expect you to have all your supplies and your textbook with you every day.

ü  There will always be a warm-up on the board to be started right away without being asked.

6.What do I do if I’m absent?

ü  When you return, you must check for missed assignments in the Table of Contents Bin at the back of the room or ask Mrs. Wyman.

ü  You must hand in any assignments that were due while you were absent. Bring it to me and be sure to write “Late – Absent” on the assignment along with the date it was due.

ü  Talk with a classmate to get more information about what you have missed.

This is your responsibility! I will not chase

after you to make up missed work!

2.  7.How am I to be graded?

I grade based on a weighted system, which means that tests, quizzes, labs, homework, and other activities such as projects, essays, and presentations are each worth a certain percentage towards an overall average.

Homework=20%

Labs and Projects=20%

Quizzes=15%

Test=45%

8.What are we going to learn this year?

We are going to focus on the following units:

1.  What is Science?

2.  Metric System

3.  Microscopes/Cells/Viruses

4.  Classification/Taxonomy

5.  The Kingdoms

6.  Ecology

7.  Human Impact on the Environment

9.Anything else I should know?

ü  No late homework will be accepted. I expect everyone’s work to be handed in on time unless you have a legal excuse. Of course, sometimes people have difficult circumstances that come up. Please see me when this happens and we can work things out.

ü  Each of you is responsible for keeping an organized folder with an up to date Unit Table of Contents. If I feel that you are not, I will schedule graded folder checks with you once per week.

I know this is a lot of information. We will be going over everything

more than once. Please share this with your family at home. I am sure that all of you will be successful this year in science and will have a

great time learning new things!
